contender, sure? I shudder to think of how good sex bomb sergio would have been if he had actually put on a pair of boxing gloves before age 20.

with this skill level he could, but to compete then you need more fights.

He could easily beat Graziano, probably Zale and have a puncher's chance against SRR. Lamotta, due to his chin, might have been the hardest match.

That is amazing. At same time maybe without the other athletic skills he developed in other sports may be he wouldn't be the same fighter?

crosstraining can be good. pac believes his basketball helps him out a lot(probably the reason he has gigantic calves) and plenty of dudes back in the day used to wrestle. I think that crosstraining in MMA and boxing will start to happen quite a bit in the United States.

I think so. At least top ten.

Obvisouly his conditioning would have to be significantly different (higher level), and I think he would need to be more active.

But the current Martinez could deff make some noise back then imo.

He loses to E Charles, A Moore, H Williams, L Marshall, C Burley, J Chase, E Booker, J Lamotta, SR Robinson, M Cerdan, and T Zale. He beats everyone else.

yes, he can make the top 10. he's fighting at a very high level right now. whether he could beat the top fighters or not is clearly up for debate.

Bull****. All those guys had losses to lesser fighters. And Martinez' career isn't even over yet we want to cast judgement? Seriously? There are giant holes in this supposed Canon of Great Fighters. It reveals the worst tendencies of historical intellectualism.

Ok he beats Tony Zale...maybe Sorry, he ain't beating Archie Moore or Ezzard Charles. Robinson kills him. Lamotta would walk right through his best stuff, Cerdan is all around better than him...Burley and williams are too talented, and marshall is more of a beast. Chase and Booker I think beat him too...beat much better fighters.

Is Martinez fought Paul Williams, Calzaghes, Hopkins, Margarito and Pavlik's every couple months..he would have a big string of losses too.

He COULD beat SRR. He's a better middle than Basilio or Fulmer. He would beat Cerdan more times than not. He is almost certainly beating Williams, repeatedly. Sorry, Cocoa Kid did a few times and so did other lesser luminaries. I, for one, think Burley is slightly over-rated by those who want to anoint him a top 10 ATG. Man, it just doesn't play out in his record. He had that negative style that makes every decision difficult but doesn't raise a pulse in me.

Granted, they don't fight like the used to, not as often nor as good match-ups. But he could certainly be in the mix in any era. The guy is good and reminds me of the old-timers

Top 10 sure, but he'd never win a belt.

He loses to Tiberio Mitri, Steve Belloise, Randy Turpin, Laurent Dauthuille, Spider Webb, Holly Mims, Joey Giambra, Pierre Langlois and Bobby Boyd but beats everyone else.

I think he'd have more of a fat chance.
