What are some of the most specific fightplans/weaknesses exposed you've seen?

I do think Hagler was pretty smart to make it a war with Hearns and rely on his chin, though I'm not sure who was actually responsible for that engagement. from range Hearns was a deadly deadly dude.

The Leonard rematch with duran also took advantage of Duran's occasionally plodding footwork and kind of augmented what gave him problems in the Viruet fight and would later give him problems in the Lang fight.

I think Floyd's awesome strategy against Corrales really exposed that he had to set and drop his right to chest level before he threw it, and everytime his right hand lowered Floyd whacked him with a leaping left hook in the face and so Corrales never even got to throw the right hard.

 

I believe Hearns initiated it. What's interesting is that most people's thoughts were Hearns early, Hagler late. Now it's seen as a mistake of Hearns' by many to not box from the outside. Once Hearns landed a big right hand and Hagler walked through it, it was game over. Tommy didn't have the chin to mix it.

Leonard also took advantage of knowing that Duran had let himself get out of shape. He just beat him mentally.

Mayweather was awesome that night. I think his early fights show just how much he has abandoned body shots recently.

 

I'd go with Tunney-Dempsey, Tunney certainly devised the fight plan to neutralise Dempsey, moving to the left and diagonally back to take away Dempsey's left hook, using in and out movement to control the range with his jab and straight right down the pipe, when they came together Tunney neutralised Dempsey's infighting by clinching. It became a battle of jabs/right hands and distance and Dempsey would never get the better of such a fight

More to it that that though, add:

1. Circle away from his left to take away the left and pop the jab or left hook to combine with stepping off
2. When you move to his left or he moves there throw the right
3. Control the movement and range with lots of small/suttle steps
4. Use a side stance to create the range
5. Short straight punches (something Mosley doesn't have) and good timing are essential
6. Time his rythm, Pacquaio's defense is very much rythmical and can be timed

The reason's it nulifies him so well is firstly because Pacquaio's footwork usually controls range and allows him to get off first, he can't do that against the more sophisticated movement. His straight left dominates opponents, timing rights on him takes that away somewhat. It exposes his defensive rythm.

I'm not actually sure if it's a gameplan though or just the fact Marquez is such a good technician

 

McCall KOing Lewis was quite specific, and Steward and McCall didn't even make a secret of it.
I read in a British newspaper a couple of days before the fight McCall detailing his strategy to counter Lewis's telegraphed right with a shorter right.

douglas feinting tyson into steping into a no mans land where he could make him pay. just kept setting the same trap and it was working all night.

Somebody has to mention Ali's rope-a-dope against Foreman.

He saw in the first round that he was dead meat if he tried to stick and move because Foreman cut off the ring too well, so he planted on the ropes and turned it into a mental war and wore Foreman down psychologically, as well as physically.

And Julio Jackson was toast against Bomber Graham with zero vision and getting picked apart in the middle of the ring. So he plants in a corner and makes Herol come to him and scores a patented exorcist-punch KO.

 

Brilliant. Not even coming close to winning 1 round = exposing someone. Pacquiao was unable to make the fight with Mosley exciting due to Shane's shameful running tactics, but he was eminently able to dominate and win with ease. Saying Shane exposed Pacquiao is like saying Oliver McCall exposed Lennox Lewis in their rematch because Lewis couldn't knock him out, ie: it makes no sense.

 

Exactly. He was only concerned with evading an aggressor, he was NOT getting into great positions to counter at all. That's a dumb myth that has been fabricated since the fight. Marquez did a much, much better job of this vs Pac.
