Could Floyd have won the Middleweight title from Hopkins or Jones?

This thread reminds me back when 3-4 years ago when a thread was made asking if Pac could beat DLH, Hatton and Floyd. Everybody also at that time said no.

Floyd should have tried...he had the skills.

 

Hopkins weakness is speed, people forget Oscar was dominating Hopkins until the phantom body shot. Floyd would give the Hopkins that lost to Taylor problems.

 

The only one he has an even remote chance against is the Hopkins that fought Taylor. He might be able to win a close decision if he fights a near perfect fight because this Hopkins was very inactive. Hopkins was definitely a bit drained by this time.

93 Hopkins takes Floyd out mid-rounds. Hopkins gave Jones some trouble in some of the rounds with his pressure. This wasn't the 40 year old Hopkins that fought Taylor and was very inactive but a 28 year old fighter who came forward and pressured you. Floyd can run but he can't hide. And it's not like he was completely green. Far from it. He just wasn't the finished product but still a very, very polished fighter.

no way! far too small for a guy as smart as hopkins and he wouldnt even have had a speed advantage over a murderous punching Jones.

Could see him frustrating both to points(guy is defensively one of the best ever) but not winning under any circumstances

 

He was polished for being a pro for only 3 years, but there's still a huge gulf between that level at Mayweather. I just don't see that Hopkins catching him, but Floyd would be in trouble if he did. Floyd's much more fundamentally sound than Roy ever was, and Roy himself got minimal credit for the win.

Here's an excerpt from a 1995 SI article that was written after Hopkins won his title from Mercado for an example of how the win, and Hopkins' reputation, was viewed:

"Eleven months after the split, Little Roy decisions Bernard Hopkins to win the vacant International Boxing Federation world middleweight title. But who is Bernard Hopkins? It's not enough to prove his father wrong, not enough to appease critics who sneer at his opponents and wonder why he has never fought a champion."

" It finally happens in November 1994. " Roy Jones," HBO commentator Larry Merchant declares just before the fight in Las Vegas, "has avoided all the toughest opponents. We don't know if he's a superstar or a fraud."

Hopkins at that time was no ATG, and it wasn't until after the fight that he started really focusing on becoming a better boxer. The ring IQ and textbook skills didn't really flourish until afterward, and those are qualities Floyd's got in spades. And Floyd won't hesitate to fight the kind of fight fans hate to come out with the W.
