Why Is Your Favorite Fighter Your Favorite?

Muhammad Ali. He came right before the eras of Roberto Duran, Thomas Hearns, Sugar Ray Leonard and Wilfred Benitez and Marvin Hagler. He was the original fab 4.

 

For everyone in this thread who picked a white guy, you picked him because of his skin color, and you know it. Fess up: you guys are white hopers.

 

I echo your sentiments Mc. Dempsey brought into the ring a visceral excitement never seen before,combined with a lust for battle,and a do or die mentality and sheer toughness never surpassed in the heavyweight division...
2- Harry Greb, the most amazing fighter in history.Fought 300 bouts,against
a slew of bigger, heavier Hall of Famers, fearing no fighter alive regardless of weight, color or style,and beating them all...And for his last 100 or so bouts,fought with ONE EYE. Simply AMAZING !
3- Joe Louis- My favorite heavyweight, the greatest combo puncher in history, and the most loved boxer of all-time...
4- Alexis Arguello,a pocket Joe Louis in the ring, and a beloved fighter outside the ring.
5-Ray Robinson- greatest fighter I ever saw ringside. For me to have seen him as a welterweight so many years ago still thrills me today...

 

What? No Ali? No Tyson? Are they too mainstream for you? Hipster ... :-(

 

Seeing someone being schooled(by Ali) or someone being destroyed(by Tyson) arent the kind of things that make me a fan of boxing. Its the stance switching in round 12 of the Pac fight, or the calling Maidana on after having his eye closed in rd 1 and being old as ****. Then with Frazier its the showboating he did in Ali I, giving him a taste of his own medicine. And the getting up 45 times against Foreman after being literally lifted off his feet.

And then ofcourse their great rivalries which make it all very dramatic and exciting.

 

Mancini: lots of heart & little talent.

Frazier is an awesome choice. I love Frazier, his first fight with Ali gives me goosebumps every time. :thumbsup

I´m not as high on Morales - more of a MAB man here - but he certainly was a great warrior and I love his trilogy with MAB.

 

Big George Foreman, cos he a fearless warrior with a pure iron chin And he is teh strongest And most powerful man in history, who swung to kill his unlucky prey with every shot.

 

I am struggling to choose a favorite.

Lennox Lewis- He could box, he could slug he could punch. He was the ultimate bully but carried himself with so much pride. He could tear down big men with his hammering blows and rematched his losses to set the record straight.

Carlos Monzon- He isnt the fastest or the most powerful yet i pick him to beat any middleweight in history, he was a master of winning the round. The ultimate in cool with his rock star like image.

Thomas Hearns- The power , the speed and the boxing ability to be a h2h nightmare for anyone. Koing from welterweight to crusierweight the man was a true fighting machine.

Benny Leonard- Rarey do i see a fighter of yesteryear who i think has the style to outbox the best of recent times , but this man had a ring IQ and boxing ability equal to anyman who ever laced gloves.

i like jj walcott because he was a genius. a true master of his craft, and then some.

I'm happy that someone else is a fan of the great bennah! i think he's probably the best LW ever. It's always very hard for me to separate him from Gans or Duran but he does have beautiful movement and was a marvel in his prime!

My own personal favorite (along with Jimmy Young of course)...Monzon was the coolest, most inscrutable of champions..a great calculating boxing mind empowered and amplified his ring weaponry..would have beatedn ALL of the middleweight champions of history.:deal
Lennox Lewis was also in turn the coolest of heavyweight bullies..but a bully with class..he was the best, IMO.
