its at +600/ -1000 here in mexico. after the weigh-in, the odds will even get better. in my experience when betting against a mexican in mexico, your best odds will come in around 12:00 pm the day of the fight.

then the opposite money will come in later in the day.

i had margo at +575(hedged it later) against pac and incredibly watched it go to +180 the day of the fight and it settled around +250 at fight time.

rhodes is there to get beat down and that's probably what's going to happen. you even list the odds, which would be a huge upset and then you argue against them.

the odds are set at what the betting public thinks. i could care less what 90 percent of the people that post here think. a handicapper looks at odds and exploits bad lines and at the end of the day(not just one fight) he hopes to come out ahead. this is a bad line. alvarez is essentially the same line against cotto, hatton and baldomir as he is now the same against a career 154 rhodes. i have not seen alvarez become a different or better fighter in the last year. actually, its worse for canelo as hatton is giving pointers to rhodes(r.hatton promotes rhodes).


jeff monson is fighting tommorow night at +290. monson should not be a +290.

 

Rhodes is a natural 160 lb fighter facing a natural 147 lb fighter at 154 lbs...he's got good skills and an awkward game that a young fighter might not be ready for. More then that however is that Alverez has a leaky defence, low work rate, and slower feet. Rhodes definintely has a chance in this fight. Unfortunently, I'll be working an on-call **** tomorrow night so I might not catch it but I'm very interested in it because I'm pretty confident that Rhodes can test Alverez quite a bit.

and just because he hadnt fought YOUR B caliber fighters doesnt mean he hadnt fought OTHER B caliber fighters. Yes, he's still unproven vs A Caliber/Elite lvl fighters. But his physical talents & abilities should make him a valid contender on that stage.

I believe he's going to show yet again, his skill sets and ring discipline, as he continues to mature into the sport. Anyone with decent analytical & observational skills can tell he's got great punch intelligence - he knows how to throw and mix it up, changing in angles, bait & countering....

what you're saying could be correct. at this point, he has not proven anything in the 154 division and everyone is calling him the next dlh.i read a few people this week that even compared him to mike tyson and alfredo angulo. and i agree with you, he is a contender. kudos to gbp and dlh for finding the best fight out there right now for canelo, especially having it taking place in guadalajara. a win over rhodes is a very good, legitimate win; unlike the hatton, ndou and baldomir fights which were essentially worthless as a barometer of his skillset.

as for b-level fighters, he is fighting one tommorow night. to this point, his competition in my opinion have been c-level fighters.

many people here on esb were clamoring about dzinzurik before the sm fight. i read things like "piston-like jab, excellent footwork, great defense" blah, blah, blah. Then you look at dzins prior body of work and think well...

unless proven otherwise, you are only as good as your prior competition.

i believe dzin was a +450 against sm and i didn't put a nickel on that fight.

Whether the fight took place in Mexico, US or the UK, Canelo would still have put a beating on him easily. The gulf in talent between the two prior to the fight was there to see for everybody, regardless of the level of opposition that Alvarez has faced so far. Yes he's being guided carefully, but which hot prospect isn't? Remember, the kid is only 20 years old.

 

In judging a fight I look at 'what has he done before?'. Harsh, but Rhodes has never been a top level fighter in his career, he's fallen at all his major hurdles and never beaten a world champion or top international contender (save Moore perhaps).

Only two people can win, there are always upsets and risk factors. But, sometimes people get caught up in the hype. Its Alvarez's fight on paper, it should be a late stoppage or points win.

World level is a high standard, its not easy to wander over to a top word champions hometown and take his title. Rhodes is not that good a fighter, more Matthew Hatton than Alfredo Angulo.
