    Its all good, bro.:good

Cooney had a wicked left hook that hurt..... Holmes was a master boxer who could see or anticipate it coming, therefore he was able to avoid it on the whole........ Marciano was not a slickster or a defensive wiz, despite his bob & weave ability....... Me thinks at some point in a 10, 12 or 15 rounder, Cooney of '81 or '82 would get off with some lethal hookage on Marciano and do some damage..... Who wins this fight? Hell if I know, but Cooney is a live dog inspite of his out of the ring issues' such as drinking....

All I'm going to say is Holmes-Marciano isn't Ali-Marciano. Ali would know when to clinch and not mess around. I can't say this for sure with Holmes because Holmes had a bit of a chip on his shoulder. Could get rough and dangerous for him.

fUYCH"S LIST OF ATG HEAVIES IS IN AN OLD RING OR BI EDITION, I WILL TRY AND DIG IT UP BUT I HAVE THOUSANDS OF THEM, WILL DO MY BEST. I REMEMBER HIS QUOTE RE MARCIANO V TYSON CLEARLY "TYSON WOULD GET TO MARCIANO, BUT WOULD GET VIOLENCE BACK IN SPADES"

True, but Shkor (who photographs actually reveal to have been a lean 220), did give Marciano issues with his size through four rounds before Rocky finally broke through with his first knockdown just before the bell ending round five, and this was a few months after JJW took a minute and a half to ice Johnny. Marciano always said the 6'4" Vingo was his toughest fight, and an aged Louis did sweep rounds three, four and five from Rocky with his jab. None had the mobility of Holmes.
Three times, I watched the entirety of a late night broadcast of Woroner's staged Marciano-Ali showdown, actually taking copious notes the second time. What was so striking to me was the dramatic visual contrast in stature between the two. Shkor and Vingo offer sparse evidence that a more skilled, durable (which Shkor and Vingo were not) and mobile heavyweight of similar stature might have posed very serious logistical issues for Rock. Louis made him look like a midget, Ali even more so. Larry was Ali's size.

Rocky has very little chance in this one. Rocky would have to come to holmes and in doing so would walk into holmes jab very often.

Holmes had not only a fast jab but also a hard one. Round after round of getting hit with it (as well as being cut) would gradually take its toll on marciano. He wouldn't be able to reach holmes with any degree of consistency because of the size difference, coupled with the fact that larry's jab was both an offensive and defensive weapon. Whatever punches that did land (which would be few) Holmes had a sturdy enough chin to absorb them, not to mention excellent recouperative powers.

Larry was also an expert at using his left arm to thwart his opponents attack. He also was a great judge of distance and anticipated punches very well. An on top of all this is the fact the holmes was technically and physically superior to anyone that marciano fought.

Rocky's style was made to order for holmes and it would be a long night for him. His only chance would be a punchers chance but holmes wouldn't sleepwalk against him like he did against shavers or snipes. He would always be watchfull of rocky's power, wear him down with jabs, right crosses and uppercuts and stop him on cuts or accumulation of punches by thr 13th round.

Not even Walcott or Charles keep Marciano away with the jab, in both cases Marciano got by there jabs and they got dragged into wars(The first Walcott fight was a war, scorecards be dame)

Though Holmes had a great jab, he is going to relie on more if he plans on beating Marciano who's swarmer style was more made for boxers imo.

you got to be kidding me, Cooney got KO'd in the amateurs by light-heavyweight Johnny Davis and my memories as an amateur were that Cooney was frail....He had some good fights over Norton and Lyle but he never fought more than 8 rds going into a title shot. I like Gerry as a person but he would have lost to a puncher earlier...I was in AC when he got KO'd by Spinks and he was no King Kong I would hate to see him get hit by the suzie-q ...Cooney was well matched but other than his left arm and shoulder the rest of his body was like a giraffes ...Cooney was an 8rd fighter and frail of legs.

    Bum,

I know, but you being an old timer should know better than that..... All I'm saying is, by June 1982, Vic Valle had Gerry Cooney a ready and trim 225 pounds who was as good as he was gonna be due to his greenery as a pro fighter..... We all know Larry Holmes won by 13th round TKO, but Cooney was alive and game from rds 1 thru 10.... Cooney was a tuff cookie that hot summer night in Las vegas

Styles also make fights.... Cooney had trouble with Larry's hand and leg speed and great left jab, as well as fast right cross down the pike.... Had this Cooney of 1982 been facing a 1953 Marciano, none of the style or the trouble Larry Holmes posed would be relevant....

Cooney had a good, pawing jab that was accurate... No way the smaller Marciano wins that battle of jabs in ring center.... Cooney's hook was only nullified by Holmes cuz Holmes was a very good technician and had good defensive techniques.... Me thinks Cooney would land hooks on Marciano despite his bob and weaving to bore inside on Gerry boy....

All I'm saying is, 1982 Cooney who fought Holmes for almost 13 rds in 100 degree heat would be a monster at 6' 6" and 225 pounds against a 5' 11" and + or - 190 pound Marciano in a very interesting dream fight......

I'm not picking a winner there or here... NO! I just think '82 Cooney is a live dog against '53 Marciano.... SERIOUS!

    NOTE!

    Bum,

Also, folks still whine that Bobick chased Holmes outta the ring as an amateur in '72, but we all know that after Holmes turned pro and got some fights under his belt, he'd have taken Bobick apart as a pro ringer....

walcott and charles were over the hill and their jabs were not in the same league as holmes. Larry had a very stiff ramrod jab and it was very punishing.

Another fact that you may be overlooking is that holmes was a about 3 inches taller than them and his reach was considerably longer than both of them.

No disrepect to the rock, I respect him greatly for his dedication, fighting heart, underestimated skill and his power. However, against larry he would have 3 things to overcome; size, skill, reach, and speed and it would be prove to be more than he could handle.

I knew Vic Valle and the Wacko Twins Cooneys managers, Cooney only fought 2 rds in 2 years and never fought 8 rds. There was inside information that Cooney was in a rehab and trying to overcome a cocaine addiction.

I also have been in Gerry company in a social situation and he tended to indulge in too much drinking and visits to the bathroom that gave him sudden energy. The were afraid Gerry would self destruct and lose to someone before he got a title shot.

Cooney had a great left hook but was a frail guy and never fought more than an 8 rd/ fight.

Duane Bobick hit his peak as an amateur prior to the KO loss to Teofilio he was never the same after that and really never impressed as a pro.

It was Ali who comented that Holmes quit against Bobick because he was ready to get KO'd but as a pro Bobick never impressed, he was a built up white fighter that had no stand out talent as a pro but Bobick was an experienced amateur on a high when he fought Holmes, that was a matter of timing.

You can see weaknesses and strengths in the amateur and they are either still there, never exposed or corrected. I think the only way to tell if they were corrected is to put the fighter in the same situation that exposed them in the 1st place.
