He was good, shame his list of opponents aren't. That's why so many questions surround his legacy.

  5. Kessler, Hopkins, Eubank, Sheik, Jeff Lacy - all at their peak pretty much. (I leave out RJJ as he was past it by a long way).
I think people are a bit too hard on Calzaghe about his resume. It could be better but it isn't all bums in there!

  6. It's about time somebody did a thread on this. We've been waiting far too long.

he shouldve rematched with b-hop too. if he rematched and won it decsively, it wouldve cemented it imo.

Your definition of peak needs refining. Hopkins was 43 and while he had a couple of goods wins before had lost 2 of his last 4 fights and had already retired and comeback.

Eubank while still very good and clearly still world class had begun to fade and in reality he was never the same fighter after the second watson fight and he was also coming out of retirement having retired 2 years prior to facing Calzaghe.

So while Joe beat 2 world class fighters in Hopkins and Eubank neither could be described as being close to peak.

REALLY?, Sheik? Did you just say Eubank was at his peak when he faced Calzaghe? Hopkins wasn't peak, but he was good enough and Calzaghe gets credit for beating him. Jeff Lacy was all hype, but was considered a dangerous opponent so we can give credit for that.

So that's Kessler, Hopkins and Lacy. 1 good fighter, 1 ATG and 1 hype job.

Agreed, he should of taken Hopkins up on his offer. I don't see why he rejected it to fight old man Jones.

I am pretty sure the two fights Hopkins lost were to Jermain Taylor, and both were very close fights. And after Calzaghe, Hopkins went on to dominate Pavlik, a couple of other fights and then he basically beat Pascal twice... so... Hmm.

I believe Joe gets way too much smack at this forum, and a lot by guys who blame him for not fighting much out of the UK while they praise fighters who did exactly the same only back in the US.
Also, his opponents weren't remotely as bad as some here want you to believe. He fought a lot of guys who were "past it", but a lot of them were still better as a lot of the youngsters back then and he beat most of them them clearly.

Joe was one of the best SMW's ever, wich has always been a strong division...
