OK, so this is probably wicked old news to you diehard MMA heads (as far as I can tell, the story broke at the end of April/early May?) but being that I only barely give a **** about this sport anymore and have been out of the loop for some time, this didn't come to my attention until it was advertised on the 2nd Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix Quarterfinal card last night. There doesn't seem to have been a poll yet dedicated to it, so this isn't just a pointless rehashing by a Johnny-Come-Lately. :D

It's crazy to think that just five years ago they were running parallel championship campaigns in Pride separated by multiple weight divisions (one reigning at welterweight, the other at heavyweight). Now time and circumstance have brought them together in an unlikely "superfight" that would have seemed a pipe dream back then.

Hendo must - if not be outright favored - at least be considered the one with momentum on his side despite being six years older, the historically much smaller man throughout their careers, and never having quite climbed to the same pinnacles that Fedor is perceived to have scaled despite his very commendable successes. He has in the last year moved up to a new weight where he has won and defended a title with a pair of solid wins. Meanwhile in that time the Last Emperor has suffered what are considered to be his only two "real" losses - and they haven't seemed like flukes - and just in general looked to be done, a faded memory of what he once was.

Both have 35 fights. Just a couple of years ago, Fedor was knocking out top heavies. Dan has never been knocked out. Emelianenko has submitted nearly half of his vanquished foes, but the last was three years ago (and was Sylvia, whose sub defense is...sub-par, to be polite). Henderson has tapped out twice, and both times to submissions favored by the Russian. Henderson isn't much of a threat on the ground, especially to someone of top notch pedigree - but does carry some dynamite of his own. Then again, Emelianenko has an excellent chin and neither of his TKO losses were really due to problems of punch resistance. On the other hand - Father Time catches up with us all, and being the younger man does not ensure that your "cage age" will necessarily be lower as everyone's body and constitution handles the rigors of decades of battle differently.

Who do you see winning? How? What will factor in heaviest? (age, size, momentum, striking, grappling etc.) :think

    Fedor by sub.

Hopefully Fedor is training smart for this fight. His hands look quick in recent videos, but I don't see him knocking out Henderson. I think they'll end up on the ground at some point, and Fedor will be too quick and too crafty for Hendo.

The last thing in the world I want to see is Fedor laying on his back with his eyes glazed over twitching.

Training with Ernesto Hoost should sharpen up his striking.

I expect Fedor to win this fight. Fedor is obviously a larger fighter, has quicker hands and the overall better grappling game. I think if Fedor gets a top position he should finish Hendo with a submission like the Nog's or Anderson Silva did. Cant count Henderson though although Fedor takes a great punch everybody CAN be knocked out and Henderson has the right hand to knock out anyone. Im intrigued by this fight but im somewhat ashamed by Strikeforce and Fedor's managment. Does Fedor need a win that badly they have to resort to having him fight a guy who is pretty much a natural Middleweight ?

Elite heavyweight vs. a fighter who drifts between 185 and 205, and has been dominated by lighter, far less skilled grapplers?

Fedor likes to fight where his opponents are strong but if Fedor is smart in this fight he takes him down quickly and subs him but i still see this fight ending with a sub for Fedor

    Agree with everything said, 100%.

I disagree with this though. I mean, come on man.

Fedor is 6ft tall with a 74in reach, and when he comes in heavy round the middle he's 230lbs soaking wet. Many many people believe that if he really whipped himself into shape, he could make 205. That's a debate for another thread of course, but it is a pervasive point of view.

And who has he been fighting of late?

Bigfoot Silva - 6ft 4in, 82in reach weighs in 265, apparently rehydrates to around 280

    Fabricio Werdum - 6ft 4in, 78in reach, 240-245lbs

    Brett Rogers - 6ft 4in, 81in reach, 260lbs

    Andrei Arlovski - 6ft 4in, 77in reach, 240lbs

    Tim Sylvia - 6ft 8in, 80in reach, 300lbs+

So in each of his last 5 fights, Fedor has given away a minimum of 4 inches in height, he has given away an average of about 4-5 inches in reach, and between 10 and 50lbs in weight!

I think the man has earned the right to face the lightheavyweight champion of the organization as he rebuilds, don't you?

The physical and mental toll must be insane on Fedor, relentlessly fighting guys so much bigger than him, always facing those disadvantages.

Dan Henderson is 1 inch shorter than Fedor and has the same reach, so so much closer to Fedor than ANY of the opponents listed above were. If Fedor weighs in at 220 and goes back up to near 230, and we expect Hendo to be somewhere about 210-220, this difference in weight still doesn't come anywhere close to the disparity Fedor faced against Bigfoot or Rogers, or would face against the likes of Overeem and Barnett.

Also, Hendo has always fought bigger guys, it's not as if Fedor is picking on a guy like Mayhem Miller here.

Hendo has already been in with Big Nog, L'il Nog, Gilbert Yvel, Vitor Belfort, Rampage Jackson, Feijao and Babalu.

He's accustomed to fighting guys who can probably reach around 220-230 in the ring, this isn't anything new for him.

Dan Henderson is the Strikeforce light-heavyweight champion, because he chose to fight at 205 and obviously was effective enough to take the title there. Fedor weighs the same as what I believe many lightheavyweights weigh on fightnight once they have rehydrated (ie Forrest Griffin, Rampage Jackson, Jon Jones, Shogun Rua, etc).

I see no problem with this fight at all. Hendo is a Pride legend, Fedor is a Pride legend but the two never met in Pride, Hendo is now lightheavyweight champion, Fedor is free after elimination from the heavyweight tournament because he was dwarfed by his opponent...

I think this is a great fight, an interesting fight, a fans' fight.
