It's 31 years ago today that DURAN the GREAT delivered to all of us A titanic sysmic & mega tsunami performence by battering the P4P olympic Goldenboy Sugar Ray Leonard all over the ring in Montreal to become at the time only the 2nd Lightweight in history to succesfully navigate his way to the Welterweight crown in near on 40+ years & the only other fighter to do this was Henry Armstrong. DURAN! DURAN! One of my top 4 fav fighters of all time in one of my fav wars if not my favorite of all time. I wish to get his fights with Castro & Barkley soon but as a fellow Duran fan it feels great to watch the master technician do his thing whether it's through an L or a W. Wonderful fighter to watch and very naturally gifted. I love Leonard too but.......he's no Duran and not in my top 4 lol.
Many people thought Ray was in trouble when Duran decided to target him as the welterwieght Champ he wanted to beat. Ray had ducked Cuevas.....then ended up getting beat by Duran. Kinda like going 0-2 at the plate in 3 monhs. Leonard was 27-0, while Duran was 71-1 going into the fight. Leonard just was not ready for Duran that nite.
SRL fought pretty damn good in the inside especially against one of the greatest infighters of all times. He was so well rounded and for him to show those inside skills in the first fight and outside skills against the master boxer Benitez solidifies that. When Duran was in his best shape of the trilogy, he beat SRL.
I Remember it just like yesterday, back when it really meant something for a fighter to move up in weight and win another title. That night leonard became too macho for his own good, fighting durans fight and playing right into his hands. Those were the days that I miss when you could go to various movie theaters and arena's and watch the big fights on closed circuit tv for a reasonable price before having to pay high cable fees to watch the garbage that's being put on today.
I think that if Leonard was fighting one of the most important fights of his life to his opponent's advantage out of stubbornness, he would have realized sometime during the first 5 rounds that it was going to cost him the victory, and he would have switched styles. He's not stupid. Dundee himself said Duran made him fight that way, and it's a bit dumb to think Leonard, over the course of the whole fight, was too macho to try and win the fight over looking tough.
