Why is it tht Frazier is praised so highly???

I don't get it. People are willing to call Bowe & Norton "legends" and "Hof'ERs" but they never had the top wins against Quarry, beat a near prime Ali, or given the best version of post-74 Ali a brutal war. Frazier is a true ATG/legend and for those that disagree need to do their research. Yes he got splattered by Foreman(another ATG) but those are his only losses apart from losing to the arguable greatest HVY of all times in Ali plus Frazier did better in the rematch with Foreman. Speaking of rematch, Ali spoiled a lot and it's not unusual to score the second fight for Frazier depending on how you score for effectiveness as Frazier still landed enough clean punches to make it close and maybe even win it.

 

I dont necessarily agree with all your points here but i get your sentiments. Joe Frazier was a fine fighter and anything suggested otherwise is, frankly, nonsense

 

I love Frazier, but if you think he was beating Ali then your as mad as the thread starter. dunno how you dont know the exact reason it was stopped as its up there on tape for all to see, but that aside, i again can see your sentiments:good

Guy certainly was not perfect technically, but what he didn't make up technically he made up in heart and determination... And while he wasn't the hardest puncher he certainly had great power in that left hook.

 

Agreed. Scores were 66-60, 66-62 and 67-62 all for Ali. On top of that, Frazier was taking a hellacious beating in the latter part of the fight.

 

I know why it was stopped I just forgot exactly what happened, if it was a cut, or if Joe was out of it, or what. I went back and watched and Futch called it before the 15th cause he said he saw 8 men die in the ring and he didn't feel Joe could continue.

I just forgot, it's been a while since I watched that fight. Usually if I am watching Ali Frazier it is the FOTC, which I haven't even watched that in months. A/F 3 I haven't seen in probably a year.

 

I think the 71 Ali was not "great" but merely "really good". I don't rate that victory as high as most. Still, Frazier cracks my top 12.

 

I and many other ringside observers and about every score I ever saw had Adrien Broner losing handily to Ponce De Leon yet the judges scored it 96-94 99-91 96-94 all in favor of Broner.

What was your score card for Ali/Frazier 3 JAB? I would have to watch it again to get mine but I'm curious if you have yours available, as I know you save a lot of that stuff.

 

What makes you so sure that Ali would smoke Farzier so easy?? Frazier simply would always have a style advantage and could take the best Ali could dish out. I think he proved that when he took Ali's best shots, flush, in Ali-Frazier III. Not to mention the guy was blind. He gets mad props for that imo

Ellis was a very skilled boxer. Yeah he was negative sometimes but he was still a real good fighter. The guy was basically a lite version of Ali himself; Operating behind a nice educated jab, with right hands and uppercuts. Nuff said on that.

Bonavena gave Ali a helluva fight and certainly was no shitty slugger like you said. He had some power in his right hand, as well as being strong and rugged.

Mathis certainly was no club fighter. He was one fighter. I mean, your argument is trying to pick apart Frazier's resume is totally off. His resume was pretty stacked if you consider how many fights he had.

Quarry X2, Ali, Bonavena X2, Ellis X2, Bugner, Mathis, Machen (whom you didn't even mention), Doug Jones, and Bob Foster.

As many times as I've watched the fight I don't ever recall scoring it. I do know there was no scoring controversy and the first two thirds of the fight was split pretty close with Ali taking over in the last third of the fight because Frazier was unable to see due to repeated jabs and straight rights. A great fight and effort by both men, but a fight Frazier would have lost in my opinion regardless of the scoring.

 

I can't remember my score but I do remember Frazier taking over from maybe the 4th or 5th round and winning about every round up until maybe the 9th or 10th when he slowed down and rounds started going the other way.

I don't think it was as one sided as those judges scores reflected.

Make one excuse after another to denigrate each of Frazier's great victories.

You could do similar with most ATG's resumes amd performances.
