What next for Ryan Rhodes (Retire or continue)?

Still one of the best in the country, as long as you can compete why quit?

What he said, I think he needs to forget about becoming a belt holder, depends whether he's happy to stick to European level and basically become a gatekeeper, he'd get decent money, but it's probably not what he's after. :good

 

Throw him in there with Julio Cesar Chavez Jnr and then once he gets beat he can retire. Lets be honest here Ryan Rhodes is not world class he would have won a world title before now if he ever was world class. His biggest win was Jamie Moore!

 

Is being in the top ten not "world class" then? Sort of like the window lickers on here who call a fighter **** because he can only win a European title. Ryan had a good go, almost lasted the distance, fought at altitude with a ridiculously short period to acclimatise. He pushed Alvarez back for a fair bit of the fight but if you can't get your breath you can't keep that up for long.

Of course the reason you discount him is pretty obvious anyhow...

 

A fighter knows when he has no fight. Who could have predicted Naz would retire so young? Who would have predicted BHop would go so long? :thumbsup

If Ryan feels like quitting he will quit.

 

If the poll had offered a distinction between domestic/European titles and world titles, I would have voted for domestic/European. I don't see Rhodes getting another world title shot - to be honest, I like him but don't think he deserves a third shot - but he could certainly do a lot in Europe. He seems to want to do that, so I hope that he continues. He has had a great career and can certainly win belts in Europe and make some decent money doing it. The Alvarez fight just told us his level, but he certainly has plenty of fight left in him.

 

You've got to bear in mind that very few boxers would want to end a long career off a one-sided, crushing loss.

One confidence-building easier fight, then European level for a couple of years to finish with some wins and his glove raised. No shame in that - pretty much my views reflect what most here are saying.

History may well remember him as a good but not top-level fighter who had his two shots at the big time and fought well, got respect - another of the Great British Nearly Men.

 

I have to admit I was disapointed with Rhodes at the weekend, Matthew Hatton made a much better fight of it and was a much smaller man, Alvarez defence may have improved from then but Rhodes hardly got near him. When he did he looked like he may trouble him but never followed up enough and to me didnt have it in him to even try.

One thing that still seemed odd, in the build up Rhodes was supposed to be the biggest (physically) Alvarez had fought? Alvarez is either a freak at the weight or is infact heavier, he looked massive compared to Rhodes.

A decent fighter, nice guy not world level and probably quite a wee bit short of that level, no disgrace at being the best in Europe.

 

Rhodes would make a great heavy bag for any gym!

 

I think the combination of inactivity, age and altitude was too much. Typical British stuff, not even giving himself a chance before the event even starts. Dropping your hands and letting yourself be knocked down doesn't help, I mean... Jesus Ryan! If it had been in Britain and Rhodes had of been active I'd give him an outside chance of taking it on points, only because Alvarez is so young though. Alvarez won't be able to make light-middleweight soon from the look of him. I'm a big fan, fights very clean, squeals to the ref if his opponent even glances his ears with a punch.

 

Yeah I agree and I noticed Alvarez is a moany little Mexican, lets wait till he fights outside Mexico and isnt so protected!

 

This isn't the end of the road for Ryan Lines.

 

Rhodes should retire. The only option for him now is to be cannon fodder for another domestic fighter and that would be a sad way to bow out, obviously in his mind the best bet will be to wait around another 2/3 years waiting for another opportunity and fight a couple of journeymen to keep busy.

In any case, Rhodes should NEVER give up on aiming for the top. The moment he does, he'll start getting beat by people domestically.

 

I think Ryan should retire. He's had a solid career, he will think he has failed by not picking up a world title and fulfilling his potential but all in all he has done pretty well for himself.
