Is Thomas Hearns a top 10 ATG in any division ?

Tommy Hearns was one of the fastest boxer/punchers who ever was an all time great and Basilio wouldn't have lasted 4 rounds with him in his prime.

Currently I have to conceive that he is a borderline top 20 @ welterweight .
It may change with time.

 

To answer the thread question, he certainly is at 154. At WW, my gut reaction is "no".

He fascinates me more than anything with the great differences he has in perfomances. Against the right guys he was almost peerless in domination, but suffered stylistically against other, lesser, fighters. From a technical standpoint he has perhaps the worst defence of anyone I have ranked so highly p4p.

 

So, in your opinion Hearns win over Hill should affect Hearns ww ranking? Makes sense. :nut

Fitz beating Dempsey is better than anything Hearns did, even better than his Duran win. Same goes for Greb beating Walker. When judging Fitz or Greb I don´t count their higher weight wins for their rankings at their lower weights. This makes no sense. Yeah, I take into account them beeing not natural hws when judging their hw resume, for example, but that does not mean their lower weight achievements affect their hw exploits.

Must say that Hearns managed to miss out on a few big names at 154-160; McCallum, Jackson and Kalambay being the major ones. It's funny how this forum works; that Leonard gets more flak for ducking some of these than Hearns do.

Even if the higher weight wins featured them weighing at a lower weight?

For example fighter A weighs at 158 and beats fighter B who weighs at 175.

When ranking fighter A as a middleweight, should that fight be considered?

I'd have to rate armstrong, robinson, gavilan, leonard and walker above him for starters personally

 

top 5 at welt and superwelt!! at middleweight his power and skills were diminished!! at 154 he might be the greatest of the whole division. 175 pounds he was not that great.

 

Then it´s a lhw fight and counts there.

Back in the days overweight bouts, when it was only 1-2 pounds or something, were most of the time still labeled, for example, a mw bout and thus I count those as mw bouts. Other than that, when one fighter is over the limit it´s a fight in another weight class.
