I give Jeffries credit I like him ,I just don't like the silly hyperbole that surrounds him.
What was elusive about Tom Sharkey do you think?
Fitz wrecked him twice with one punch stoppages, how come Jeffries couldnt stop him in 45 rds?
Ruhlin retired in his corner. Fitz and Corbett were worn down ..Where is the proof? That' s what I am asking.
I see Braddock on the floor against Louis his face ripped open his teeth pushed through his mouth piece, [have you any idea how tough a 1940's] mouthpiece was?] I see Willard with his cheekbones caved in ,his nose broken in two places, his jawbone cracked, ribs smashed. And I see Tom Sharkey a man smaller than Lastarza ,[ and 4inches shorter ,than the man you called tiny], fighting Joe Goddard 3 months after losing to Jeffries..Have you ever had broken ribs? If you have you will know how much they hurt, I fought a fella who weighed 16stone, over 4 stone more than me at the time, I'm fatter now  ],he cracked a couple of mine, let me tell you ,I dreaded just coughing or sneezing,I can't see Sharkey being that badly off then coming back in 12 weeks to ko Joe Goddard.
No evidence that I can see, puts Jeffries near the top range as a puncher, belting out old super middleweights and light heavies ,coming out of retirement does not cut it,especially as he had to wear them down first.

I really dont understand why Munroe is so harshly dealt with by many on here, he seems to have been considered a lot better than most, and his fight with Sharkey was actually an eliminator it seems. Here is Jeff's comments about the fight.

And worse yet, it seems a hoodoo may have harmed ferguson's chances.

heres an interesting rule change for the Ferguson Johnson fight. No hitting allowed in the clinches. Note also that if Johnson does not beat Monroe, he says he does not deserve to fight Jeffries.

And looking into the Johnson situation, it is interesting to note that it seems he is right about the perception of Johnson. Here is a round by round from Johnson Ferguson where Ferguson is reported to look over weight. We know now that Johnson's style was to not take chances and he was a great, but i can see why a match with Johnson was not attractive.

And it seems that Johnson was far from impressive against monroe.

it is actually sad and frustrating to see how close Jeffries Johnson fight came to being made.

Probably because he looks like a character from Toy Story. A lot of people here use appearance to judge a fighter's ability(especially one they know nothing about), and that goes for any era.

B ,don't you think it a telling that the paper commented that Munroe hadn't learned the fundamentals of boxing in his three years in the game?
From reading the accounts I deduce that Johnson was not going all out for a stoppage is that your impression?
I think a fight between Jeffries and Johnson would certainly have made more money than the Jeffries Munroe debacle which was described as being dissapointing at the box office, and is given as the reason that Jeffries retired.

    Thanks for posting this.

I wish to say that, though I'm mostly defending Jeffries, I'm glad that your ctiticizing now who Jeffries fought, but rather performance in light of who he fought. (If Jeffries hadn't fought Sharkey, Fitzsimmons and Corbett, we'd now be criticizing him for ducking them).

Some interesting paralels with Marciano's era.

You have older former champions, who were not big for the era, but managed to round up the up and comers of the new generation.

I don't penalise a champion if this happens in their era.

By that logic you would rate Jeffries higher simply by virtue of Gus Ruhlin having beaten Bob Fitzsimmons.

Did he have to fight them twice each?
And if he did ,why did it take him so long to get around to it?

He didnt have any choice but to fight Fitz, because Fitz knocked out all the number one contenders in the meantime. Corbett II was probably more about the name and money, although i suppose the rematch (given the form of the first fight) was as desirable as HOly-Bowe, Tyson-Ruddock etc.

Fitz had been retired for 2 years when he fought Jeffries the second time.
Was he really the best challenger?
