Stuart Barnes, former England five-eighth and now rugby writer with The Sunday Times, attended Origin II in Sydney on Wednesday. Here's his verdict.

Origin; Australia's equivalent to Rome's Colosseum. Instead of bread and circus to amuse the masses, rugby league delivers Origin, the game's ultimate spectacle. Instead of clowns and foolery to open the festivities, we are treated to NSW under-18s beating their Queensland counterparts. Amidst the promise are some poor errors but here is a harbinger of things to come.

Outside the ground, the food stalls are sucking supporters into their sometimes malodorous tents but who cares; the quality is awaiting us inside the stadium. Forget the impending union strike action (that's not rugby union) and the state of the world's economy, this is Origin and that's all that counts.

A lady in tasteless maroon cools herself on the overheating train from Central Station. The laminated card that acts as her fan reads, ''It is official - New South Wales sucks.'' The NSW supporters stand politely aside as the train doors open. The concourse is filling up, and all the manners I see are better than the sausage I eat, which is described as gourmet and is close enough to the mark to see me contentedly around the stadium to entrance K

So, to the action and the gladiators with their grand entrance the foreground to the bolts of flame; nearly 82,000 are hooked, hollering, howling - in the main for maroon blood. It is everything I expect - until the kick-off. At which point I am curiously bored. The first 30 minutes is deja vu. It is the stuff I have seen in England's undoubtedly inferior leagues; heck, it is nigh identical to the kids' warm-up game.

The problem has nothing to do with the combatants. They are fabulous. Paul Gallen is bringing down the bigger Queensland beasts as Sam Thaiday rampages around. Michael Ennis swings an arm dangerously high, and we all love it. Best of all are the constant collisions as Queensland's vaunted pack run straight at the Blues, pounding the defences but getting nowhere, well at least no more than eight points away.

But the game's shape is so predictable. In the getting-to-know-you bash-up period, the ball is almost exclusively played between the two 15-metre lines with the backs accessories to requirements. The pace is unrelenting, much quicker than nearly all union games, and the error count is astonishingly low. Queensland do not drop a ball in the first half, and only one pass fails to find its target.

These men are in fantastic shape and highly skilled. I imagine most union forwards playing at this pace and with this skill but my imagination fails me. And yet for 30 minutes of high-octane, low-error rugby I am bored. There might be hardly any dead time but nor is there much in the way of thinking time.

Watching the back three run back kicks is a snore-fest. Sure, Akuila Uate is dynamite but there is never a need to weigh options and make any important decisions. Pick an angle and go for it. If you are tackled, fall to the ground and start again. No risk of being isolated and turned over, no chance of the opposition stealing away for the score. Union requires players to think through every step of the way, league, even at this level of skill, does not, and that is why elite union eclipses the best league.

However, the best union is admittedly a rarity, and more often than not when players are not capable of making good decisions the laws of unintended consequence produces a match where wingers think and kick and think and kick ad infinitum. The men and women who like their bread circus are not going to abide much of that passionless stuff, and by full-time I cannot say I blame them.

If the sheer predictability of the first half hour is tedious in a punishing sort of way that seems to satisfy the crowd, the last 50 minutes flowers into something quite marvellous. Ricky Stuart and his radical reassessment of the front row works wonders.

Once the Blues get hold of the ball and their kicking game, they run the bigger Queensland side off their feet. Queensland looked comfortable while Jamie Soward kicked straight into the waiting arms of Billy Slater, whose reading of the game is quite brilliant. When Mitchell Pearce's wonderfully weighted high kick results in a try for Luke Lewis, the pendulum swings.

Growing in confidence, Soward grows an identity other than the faint shadow of the Emperor's favourite, the great Darren Lockyer. The Queensland five-eighth might have been forced into a quiet game but still showed enough flashes to make me wish he had spent a few years gracing the other code. But tonight the game slips from him.

Balls kicked hit the grass, no longer zeroing into waiting Queensland arms. Escape from deep positions becomes so much more difficult. The foundations of a league team can clearly be undermined by a great kick-and-chase game. In the last 50 minutes, the transformation in the fortunes of NSW's kicking game pulls the rug from under the feet of galloping monsters such as Dave Taylor.

Now the ball moves in all directions. Occasionally the lack of giant carriers gives the Blues' attack the look of a demented pinball machine but with such high individual skill levels they are able to extricate themselves in the way most union players cannot. The crowd roar their pleasure as the Blues pull clear. The masses have been given their show and a NSW win.

In the press box, the atmosphere muted by the glass, and with a dose of bronchitis from the SFS last Saturday, I am not quite up for a Damascene moment. I still think union is more varied and superior but league's players sure can play; some circus.
