If Ali gave Foreman a rematch the rope-a-dope would not have worked a second time and Foreman would have won a decision in a some what dull fight.
If Prime John Tate had a solid chin he would have gojne down as a higly regarded Hw champioln.. He was one of the fist Big hws that had some serious skils.. I recall my dad saying that he thought Tate might beat Holmes. (before being kod by Weaver)... All around Tate was the the better fighter than Cooney,,But i cant see him avoidning Cooneys Power.... Cooney was also a fast starter.. I wouldnt pick a whole lot of HWs over prime Cooney in a hth matchup,, Especially one with a glass jaw. Carl Williams was another great talent that could have done big things if he had a chin.. Leave it to Hercules to come from behind to put the lights out these prominsing hws.
I think you'd have to be very anti-Leonard to say it's way out there to pick him to win 1 out of 3. Of course, many on here are...
If the rematch had come in 1975,Ali would have knocked George out again. He would n't have needed the rope-a-dope.
I agree, '75 Manila Ali would still KO Foreman, without the rope-a-dope. The timed righthand of Ali is key to victory, what people often don't realise is Ali was stunning Foreman 2 or 3 times literally every round with his straight right. Plus Ali would still manhandle Foreman in the clinches.
Tate was undoubtably a better boxer than Cooney. But he also proved to have a dodgy chin in his fights with Mike Weaver and Trevor Berbick, and one thing Cooney could do was punch.
