    louis,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, ali ko 13
    marciano,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, ali points UD....wide 10-5
    tunney,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, ali points UD.....wide 9-5-1
    dempsey,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, ali ko 14
    charles,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, ali ko 10
johnson,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, ali points UD.... quite close 8-6-1
holmes,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, ali points UD...quite close 8-6-1
tyson,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, ali points UD....quite close 9-6
    lewis,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, ali ko 11
    holyfield,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, ali points UD....wide 10-5

style wise i see a prime tyson winning early rounds vs ali before fading a bot when he knows he cant knock ali out , holmes was a lesser ali with-out the speed and movement , johnson's old style would give ali fits but ali's speed and accuracy sees him through

that is why ali to me is the greatest heavy of all time - frazier is my fav heavy of all time

I'd make him the favorite over everyone else as well, peak for peak. It's not really the reason he's the GOAT at Heavyweight though. He has the greatest single-division resume in the history of boxing, bar none. The case for any other heavyweight rating above him is weak, and pretty much unjustifiable as i see it.

What in gods earth would lead some one to believe Jack Johnson gives Ali more trouble than Lennox Lewis does?

ever heard of styles make fights???

johnson had a weird style from a by-gone age that like norton ali would struggle againt

lewis just hasnt got the workrate , jab or movement to stay with a prime ali

those are my reasons , remember esb is a discussion board

Lets not put the work rate of Lewis down when arguing for Johnson.

Your right this is a discussion board, so enlighten me. What is it about Johnsons style that troubles Ali?

his left leg was miles infront of his body in comparison to boxers today with his hands held high while he leaned back , he was quite fast also which gave him the chance to counter when needed.

boxers found it hard to get to johnson as his huge arms were always out catching punches.

its a different era of fighting to what it is now

i believe that johnson give just about every heavyweight champion serious trouble

now why would lewis give ali so much trouble???

ps: there is a ring magazine from the 90s that did a special on ali vs the greats , they had ali beating everybody except johnson who they would fight to a draw. I think ali would win but if you can get a hold of that mag its a great read.

there was also a heavyweight ring special mag that hadevery champion up to evander holyfield , another recommended read

I think Holyfield is probably his toughest matchup. Technically sound combination puncher, great spoiler, absolute profressional with a heart of a lion, he wont be discouraged or enraged. Solid chin, good stamina.

Stylewise i think Holyfield has the best shot. Guys going out looking to take Ali's head off are going about it the wrong way.

Holyfield and peak Frazier are the only two guys, i'd slightly favour over Ali

I could see Louis beating him but, struggle to envisage anyone else doing so. Frazier and Marciano would also have a greater chance than most albeit a small one.

Holyfield at his best would probably give Ali the most trouble, as he had a good chin, could box, was excellent on the inside and not afraid to use rough tactics, and had good stamina at his best. However, I still wonder about the 'alleged' use of roids!

    I don't buy it.

Any one of these results is plausible on its own, but colectivly they are implausible.

Anybody is going to pick up a loss against sombody on this list.

I am a little surprized by a number of people picking Holyfield as the toughest potential match.

Yeah, I don't get it either as I feel like Holyfield would struggle a lot with his jab, being as squared up as he is/not having a good parry. His intangibles would serve him a lot, but i don't see it. I don't think he'd succesfully cut the ring and impose him enough. Ali would counter him and keep that range with a deadbolt.

The man to beat the greatest is still Joe Louis. The skills. The ability. The feints. The power and handspeed.

As you say, maybe Louis could do it and maybe he couldn't, but he certainly has a lot of tools to work with.

Maybe because Lennox Lewis isn't fit to carry the jock strap of a legitimate great like Jack Johnson.

Ali would embarrass Lennox Lewis. I can't say the same about Jack Johnson.
