WUdnt put Ali in..defensively.He was a fast sonofabitch..but defense he had NONE..reflexes and defense r a diffrent story..alis the greatest....but not in the defense area
This is what I'm talking about though, he was often dropped PRE-exhile by lesser fighters, or if not dropped than stunned. He was dropped by Cooper and one other fighter pre exhile, and rocked by at least 2 more after making simple stupid mistakes, and these were B level fighters. Again, mostly pre-exhile is what I was referring to when I said that. It just seems most of the fights of a young Ali I watch he gets caught far too often making stupid mistakes like that, and a lot of times he gets stunned.
Ali in his prime had a sound defense as he was seldomly hit with any punches over a lengthy period of time during fights. Being caught at the tail end of punches happened when was pulling out of range, but not too often. Unorthdox technically, rarely held his hands up to block and relied on reflexes and speed of foot. The bottom line for me; he made his opponents miss often when he was at his peak. That simplifies it.

Defense is avoiding punches (not getting hit). A prime Ali, circa 1967, was able to accomplish this fighting in an unorthodox manner.
..............I think it's impotant not to get too hung up about strict definitions of what makes this or that. By some definitions here, reflexes and natural athleticism can't count for anything. By this definition, Ali and Roy Jones cannot be considered good defensive fighters. No one who has seen them fight could believe that of course. Did they get hit with many punches in their respective primes? No. Hence, they were good defensive fighters.

ok your right..roy j and ali had excellent timing which avoided many blows..i was just thinking off of a strict defensive perspective..but you guys r right..defenses is not getting hit period..
:good If we were going strictly by best 'fundamental defenses', Jones and Ali wouldn't make the list.
You can't really knock him for not having Locche on the list as maybe he's strictly going with what footage he's viewed. Thats my take on why Locche is nowhere to be seen. He's calling it as he sees it.
Herol Graham was a good defender in that he was good at using the shoulder roll and footwork to get out of the way of shots, not too dissimilar to Floyd Mayweather. Trouble was - Mayweather has a chin, Herol didn't!
But Benitez below Armstrong? That's madness. Armstrong wasn't even particularly good defensively, aside from decent head movement when pushing forward.
