Say Holyfield moved up to HW in 1988 and instead of Tyson/Spinks, it was Holyfield/Spinks with Tyson waiting to meet the winner. Do we still have Tyson/Spinks or does Tyson/Spinks never happen and we get Holyfield/Tyson in 88?
I feel Spinks would have stood a better chance against Holy at that stage because they were near each others weight and Spinks was doing some clever stuff against Tyson he just couldn`t match his offense but Holy didn`t seem to bang as hard when he was a small heavy. What if Spinks moved down to cruiser in 88 to fight Holy?!
Tough fight but I think Holyfield would edge him out probably in the later rounds. Interesting matchup though.
Holyfield had his first HW fight around the time of Tyson/Spinks. He stopped a shop worn James Tillis The fight didn't prove much. Spinks/Holyfield never would have happened before Tyson/Spinks as Holyfield had not proved himself at HW and the public demand/$ wouldn't have been nearly the same.. There would have been too little risk/reward for Spinks to take that fight. That said, in hindsight, it would have been a competitive matchup. Spinks may have had enough left to eke out a decision.
