AJ/Pulev

I think Joshua does not benefit from the added weight as it does not suit him. He puts it on as muscle and it slows him down. Though Pulev is old he is a very good fighter. I think if Joshua comes in 18st plus and he doesnt get Pulev out of their in 3 or 4 rounds he may well lose.

Pulev has a good boxing IQ and and outstanding jab. When Joshua gets to muscle bound his jab slow down and he abandons alot of his solid boxing fundamentals. If Joshua comes in 17-17.8 ish, uses speed movement and educated pressure and good work rate he will break Pulev down.

 

Styles make fights and Pulev is exaclty what AJ wil feast on.
Height and reach advantages as well for AJ - I'd expect a fairly routine win

 

Be interesting to dig up what the views were before the first one was cancelled and how they have changed in the years since.

 

Pulev is one of those fighters where everything comes off the jab, and he doesn't really have an effective Plan B or ability to make adjustments.

The jab is one of the best in the division, and on its own is enough to get the better of second tier heavyweights.

If you neutralise or work around the jab, what you have left is an upright unit with moderate power, little head movement, and a dentable chin. He's similar to Frank Bruno in that sense, although not on the same level power wise and with a largely ineffective right hand.

Wlad gave him angles, and brought the hook into play around Pulev's jab. Pulev had no answer at all to that, and was a sitting duck for a highlight reel knockout. It's worth noting that the same ploy had limited success against Joshua, who for the most part easily avoided Wlad's left hook.

I don't think it's as simple an equation as Wlad hammered Pulev so AJ should do the same; Povetkin for example gave Joshua a lot more problems than he did Wlad. Joshua though has so many tools to beat Pulev, in a manner of different ways. He's got the better movement, better punch variation, better power, better combinations, and a better finisher. For all the talk of Joshua's chin he's took big shots from big punchers and got through it. It's rare that a fighter who is better in virtually every category loses a fight (Lewis-Rahman I is the first I can think of).

Pulev is no mug and often underestimated. It's really difficult though to see how he beats AJ though unless something freaky happens.

 

A few years ago Pulev would have caused AJ a good few problems. I’m not sure what he’s got left. I think Joshua takes him out in 6/7.

 

Watched Wlad v Pulev at the O2 World Arena in Hamburg in 2014 and can state without any hesitation - PULEV WAS A PLODDING PUDDING in his prime and a fading/aging Wlad battered him all over the arena.

Does he have a chance - anyone has a chance against a man who has zero punch resistance to even mediocre power punches but the new Hughie Joshua should easily win this dancing contest.

 

Funny you mention Hughie because he badly rocked Pulev the 8th which we all know is not a good thing lol. AJ to finish this fight whenever he likes.

 

The softest World Heavyweight Title defence since King Pudding Andy Ruiz - any decent World Heavyweight Champion should have little problem dispatching Pudding Pulev in his prime never mind now.

 

In case anyone is contemplating the upset, watch Pulev-Booker. Then rethink

 

Surely this non contest World Heavyweight Title defence is £0.99 PPV on Sky?

 

If Joshua and Fury fight at the end of this year I think Joshua getting a brutal quick and spectacular KO over Pulev will add to the build-up, since AJ hasn't scored a KO since Povetkin in September 2018.
Also, it would work well with Fury-Wilder 3 a month or two later, where I'd expect Fury to brutalize Wilder in a few short rounds (maybe 1 round !) too (although I have my doubts about Wilder actually forcing that fight when he and his circle calm down and let things sink in over the next few weeks).

So, really, the only real plus to this fight (aside from retiring a boring Bulgarian pudding from 'contendership') would be as a ballyhoo fight for the big one at the end of the year.
It would be nice if they could just stick it on the BBC or ITV for free.
