Just noticed on boxrec that "The Hurricane" is has his 9th fight tonight against Sean Hughes in Belfast. 8 wins, 8 ko's all within 3 rounds. I still haven't seen him fight....how far can the 21 year old Cuban bantamweight go?
Not seen Acosta fight but watched fellow cuban/now based in America, Yudel Jhonson recently... was very impressed similar style to De Gale... one to look out for anyway IMH(humble)O
Acosta can go very far, he's only 21 but has been impressively blowing away(albeit limited) opposition. I've seen him twice in person and one or two videos of other fights aswell. His left hook to the body is potent and he'll look for that shot from the off. He's aggressive and will look to pressure opponents, getting of furious combinations. The 'Hurricane' moniker is very accurate, as accurate as the man's own punches . It's still hard to say how far someone will go when he's only fought to the level he has, but the early signs are very promising. I think he'll do a real job on Sean Hughes tonight and from that we'll be able to make a better observation. But the indication is that at the moment, with a fighter who has such a good amateur background, is so young, and has made such an impressive start to his career that he has the makings of a World Class fighter. Interesting to note that he's blowing so many guys away because as an amateur he wasn't thought of as a puncher. He does also suffer from hand trouble aswell, which may inhibit him in the future.
saw him a few weeks ago ko'ing some bum with a sweet body shot was meant to be fighting for the wba inter-continental tonight against some unbeaten south american who pulled out as far as i know he is going to be based in miami from next year on
From what I've heard of sparring sessions there's question marks about his toughness and dedication to sport. He certainly has the ability to get to he top though.
Acosta won by stoppage in the 2nd round. Hughes has said on the boxrec forums that he believes he won the first and that the referee stepped in early after he was caught with a good shot. Would be interesting to get the view of someone who was there. Edit: here's what gasman had to say about it on the Irish thread in general: 'Full house tonight. Acosta was class - I was so impressed with him. Although I felt sorry for Hughes - who was not overawed at all and put up a good fight. The stoppage by a flurry, was a little premature as Hughes was not hurt and covered up well. Both McDonaghs won, JJ was particularly impressive with a first round KO. Luke Wilton continued his excellent form with a first round KO.'

Let#s hope they push him well. Although Hasegawa is the concensous number 1 at 118, it's still an open division and Acostas class would be welcome still.
