I've seen the two Pryor fights and I'm starting to get a real interest in Arguello. I've got some time to kill and I'm wondering what fights I should watch of his to see him prime? Cheers for any suggestions!
One of my very favorites.........I'd start with: Alfredo Escalara x2 - (he won the title at 130 against Escalera, his best weight, I think. Great fights). Mancini - Spirited effort from the youngster, but Arguello shows his patience and intellect as well as his killer instinct. He knows when to pull the trigger. Olivares - First title, at 126. Olivares leads until the 13th, then.......boom. Kobayashi - Just because it features a body shot that makes you wince every time you view it. Ganigan - Shootout! Arguello knocked down, then disembowels his challenger.

Also his unforgettabel battles at 135 against a young undefeated Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini and Andy Ganigan. Also you probably don't know this but Arguello was actually on fight away from a major showdown with Roberto Duran, for Duran's undisputed/ringmagazine world lightweight championship belt in 1978 following Duran's June 1978 knockout victory in his triology against three-time archrival and one time conqueror Esteban DeJesus, but lost in a tune-up bout, via 10-round decision, against opponent Villimar Fernandez in what was probably the big upset of 1978 after Leon Spinks' 15-round split decision victory in his first fight against Muhammad Ali for the world haevyweight championship. Arguello avenged that defeat to V.Fernandez five years later by 10-round decision.
Watch his fights back to back, bro. You won't be disappointed. I've had an entire day extravaganza of watching him, and trust me, it's a rewarding experience. You'll be able to appreciate his ability and the excitement of his fights all at once.
Best place to start is his first fight with Fernandez,where Arguello puts on clinic on how to cut off the ring effectively.Once you're done with that,give his fight with Boza Edwards a watch.Fight really highights his offense against an incredibly tough,game fighter. The fight with Roberto Elizondo was one of his more notably polished boxing performances,capped off with a peach of an uppercut to the body to finish things off.
I just love his gauntlet at sfw. I know lineal whores never consider him to have been sfw champion but he was a level above everyone else in the division.
By the way,don't actually watch the first Villomar Fernandez fight anticipating Arguello to put "on clinic on how to cut off the ring effectively",because he doesn't.
It was one of his latter fights, but in the Rooney fight he put on a display of precision punching capped by a laser beam of a right hand. Not a classic fight by any stretch but God what a right hand.
