Don't lump me in with the 'reluctance to fight in Vietnam crowd', I never said that.
I did mention the possibility of him joining the U.S.O. Tours.

Where all would have benefited. Boxing exhibitions, etc.

Nobody really thought Ali was a chicken. I couldn't imagine letting him drive a Jeep,

Alex,I think you'll find that every boxer,in fact every human being has double standards that surface from time to time. For example,your man Tyson. He went through a phase of referring to Frank Bruno as a 'coconut' citing Bruno's pandering to the 'white establishment' but Tyson is the biggest example of a white bigot's stereotypical negative image of a black man. Muhammad Ali was/is a well rounded human being with virtues and faults like anyone else. I daresay that you're a fan of Tyson because of his devastating knockouts he dolled out in the peak part of his career,and his encyclopaedic knowledge of boxing history. His negative points such as his treatment of women,and dining on Holyfield earcake go along with the person.

Good point. Vietnam was a complete waste of time,and the U.S.A. had no business being there.

 

Ali just flat out believed he could have gotten out of the U.S. Army induction.

His lawyers convinced him of that. But that move back-fired a bit.

Though I do agree, it wouldn't have been to smart to send him to Vietnam with all the publicity, of a filmed war.

Wouldn't have been too good seeing, Ali burning huts in the villages, or blowing up a Viet-Cong bunker with a Grenade-Launcher.

 

It's interesting that the government dropped the minimum pass mark,so they could attempt to draft Ali again,is n't it ? He took a stand,giving up his best years in the ring.

Vietnam was a tragedy, a mistake, anyone with a brain in their heads knew it, thank goodness for Ali protesting that quagmire.

 

i agree. right or wrong, whether or not i agree with him, he took a stand. he had the courage of his conviction no matter what we think of it and it cost him. i give him a lot of credit for his stance and the war, in retrospect, was a joke filled with atrocities and human rights violations. did ali know that? maybe, maybe not but i don't condemn him for not participating
