Ali v Young

Any fighter that pulled the trick that young did deserved to lose. You don't win the heavyweight championship of the world by sticking your head between the ropes. I've heard of the manly art of self defense but there was nothing manly at all about what he did, it was stupid and bordered on cowardice. He thought that he was being smart but it cost him the fight.

I don't know what he was thinking, but if moves like that were legal than there would be no need to practice REAL defensive skills like slipping, ducking, bobbing and weaving.

 

Which makes just as much sense as saying about any Ali fight "You don't win the heavyweight championship by pulling a fighter down on his neck". Great job of reducing an entire fight to one single action, the classic strawman argument. :good

Seriously, I've seen very little on these boards more ignorant then that. The crowd was playing along with what Young was doing to Ali to the point where it had Ali so frustrated he was pissedd off and trying to decapitate Young when he was leaning out of the ropes by punching over the top rope down at him.

The man out Ali's Ali himself and people cry about it.

 

Ali's tenure as champ during his second reign was amongst the most boring in boxing history. Anyone who thinks otherwise need not be taken seriously. There could be an argument that Norton III ranks as high as third-and it's very dull bout.

I thought Young did enough to win but it was hard to get a decision over Ali ...I remember the 1st Norton fight, a friend of mine was hoping they would give it to Ali but it was clear Norton won big and broke Ali's jaw...still we were not sure they would give it to Norton....you did not win a close one over Ali.....great Champs should be beaten decisivly...Louis/Walcott? Ali/Norton Ali/Young Holmes/Witherspoon/Williams....I say give the Champ an edge but not a gift......Young beat Ali IMO but he did not destroy him, it was close..Jimmy should have put his peddle-on-the mettle

 

I thought it was pretty funny. And all you Ali fans would have thought it was funny too, if it was Ali who did it.Young whipped Ali, I thought it an entertaining fight, though I love to watch a seemingly overmatched slickster spoil the favorite. While I appreciate a great Holmes beating a Cooney or anyone else, I much more enloy watching , say, a 45 yr old Hopkins beat a young kid champ like he did recently. Sticking his head out the ropes a few seconds was no reason to rob Jimmy Young of the title he one. Why is everybody so far up Ali's butt? I liked him as a fighter, but damn, when someone beats him, they should win. And you don't have to REALLY BEAT the champ, thats a crock. Its scored on the ten point must system.

 

joebeadg makes a good point. Did Holmes decisively beat Norton? If I remember correctly the title changed hands on a single point. I also think that Young deserved the win technically speaking but the judges weren't ready to let boxing's cash cow ride into the sunset just yet. Politics as usual.

 

I thought Young won a close decision......there used to a photo of Young somewhere showing great "surprise" when the decision was announced.

Ali should have rematched him like Louis did Walcott.

 

He went outside the ring several times. The ref would have been justified in disqualifying him. It is like intentionally going down without being hit.

granted, jimmy young did win the fight realistically but I still say that he should not have stuck his head through the ropes. Ali did have a habit of holding behind the head but its not as bad as what young did, and besides, i'm glad that young didn't get the decision. Who would want to see young as champion anyway? Even though he was a very good boxer, he was about as exciting to watch as an hour glass.

 

Boxing is a mans sport and not for cowards. When you get under pressure you don't stick your head between the ropes. Be a man and deal with your opponent in the honorable way.

 

Ali and Norton didn't mesh very well in the ring...... All three fights were kinda' dull and uninspiring to me... The "Rubber" match was the most meaningful, since the title was on the line.... Still, not a true classic fight...

"Ali-Shavers" of '77 was much better / classic.......

"Ali-Spinks" stunk like a pair of farts in a gym locker room....

Jimmy Young was slippery but boring........ NOBODY in the world of boxing wanted Young on the throne.......

Ali was THE GREATEST!! However, his fights after Manila were pretty dull and uneventful, except, for Shavers.......
