Has he trained any fighters of note other than RJJ. I've never been impressed with him as a trainer-other than when he went after Norman Stone. It seems as if RJJ was a finished product and Merk just sat in the saddle for a well paid ride. Thoughts?

Roy Jones was never a finished product. He had great physical gifts, enhanced by performance enhancing drugs but he never learned the ins and outs of boxing which is why he wasnt able to compete after he started slowing down. You dont need to be the fastest most athletic guy on the block, or even have the best timing, as long as you have the fundamentals. Jones didnt. It also didnt hurt that Jones spent the vast majority of his career carefully selecting opponents to make him look better than he actually was.

You dont get as far as Jones did without having sound boxing skills. All fighters whose style is based on tremendous speed of hand and foot become far less dominant when they slow. Jones just didnt have the chin of an Ali or Evander Holyfield, so he couldnt sustain similar punishment once he slowed, but that post is miles off base.

Thanks, it just seems as Roy Sr. put the package together and Merk was along for the ride. I can't recall him saying or doing much in the corner either. I could be wrong.
