Amir has incredible physical tools but it seems like he does everything possible to limit the use of his tools. He was moving to his right against southpaw McCloskey and telegraphing his lunging punches so any half decent boxer just needs to pivot to his right and get away. Amir was winning just on aggressiveness but it was painful to watch him lunging and missing when he could have been much more effective. Its like Amir has A+ tools and C- ring intelligence.
This has always been the case. Roach has indicated that Khan often has too much of a 'fighter' mentality, and so he sometimes throws the gameplan aside and just tries to swing away. To be fair, though, the majority of fighters don't show good ring intelligence. Even someone as great as Pac (and I do love watching him fight) often employs unwise tactics to entertain the crowd or satisfy his hunger for a good fight. It's quite rare to see a good ring tactician like Floyd or maybe Donaire.
khan lacks ring generalship big time.he didnt seem fully in controll and force the other guy to fight in his pace. Im starting to switch to bradley in this match up because he is more skilled. Khan needs to fix a lot of his flaws if he wants to achieve greatness otherwise he will get stopped within a year. I think all the guys at 147 (ortiz,may,pac even berto) beat him at this point.
I agree, I think Bradley can anticipate Amir's attack and attack him on the inside where Amir's still relatively vulnerable.
Incidentally, it was the shot that turned his eye into a grapefruit, but Morales was basically hit once by the same Maidana uppercut that Khan pretty much blocked with his chin all night long. Khan is a good athlete with very nice punching instincts who has a hell of a lot to learn about defense and fighting on the inside. He can still look very amateurish at times.
His ring IQ is way too low for somebody with his style and attributes. He needs it to keep him from getting KTFO and that may be soon folks
I didn't hear what Roach was telling Khan between rounds but this is definitely not a Roach's game plan.
Instead of constantly jumping in with combinations with no open windows, he should have opened them up by working off of the jab and adding in feints. This would have slowed down the hectic pace of the fight and opened mccloskey up for some crisp shots. He would of had him out of there in 8 rounds in impressive fashion. Khan is no more than a lesser De la Hoya. A man who himself was a novice in the departments of adaptability and strategy.
I agree he fights brave like manny yet he should fight way smarter, I think bradley fight can go either way but I cant see him getting stopped. But if he moves up after that and tries to fight ortiz or mayweather like this he will taste the canvas for sure, even if he rematches maidana at 140 he will get tagged again. I still think firing ariza was a mistake on khans part.
yeah I agree with you. Yeah I may talk crap about Team Manny a lot, but I know Freddy is a goodass coach and Ariza is the best conditioner also. I've seen dramatic changes with the fighters he works with and Amir is going to regret that move
Agree. Bradley takes him out unless he removes these flaws from his game. Also needs to earn respect from his opponents by throwing good solid punches, not that pitta patta shoe shining ****. I liked the way Gurrerro got respect from the very game Katsidis last week. H~e did that with a good solid hard jab. Khan definately didn't use his brilliant jab, and I know it was hard against an awkward opponent refusing to fight... but even then Khan fought at McCloskeys level instead of taking the guy out with more skill - rather he lowered his skill level to fight the other guys fight. Same thing happened against Maidana and in the end he scrapped through the Maidana fight. Bradley take him at this point and any talk of Mayweather is just plain stupid. It would be the same mismatch that Khan v McCloskey was except Khan would get shut out and probably KO'd if he tried that lunging arm pumping crap.
It was a style thing too. A spoiler is always going to frustrate the hell out of a boxer-puncher. But Khan definitely fought down to McCloskey's level, wasn't picking his shots well.
