    Andy Hug Appreciation Thread

    Many of us were fortunate to witness at least some of Andy Hug's illustrious career that spanned 1982 to 2000, and it's probably time we had a thread where his career and life could be discussed by those interested.

    -> The first non-Asian to become professional world champion in full-contact karate.

    -> The first karate fighter able to hold his own against the best kick and Thai boxers.

    -> The first martial arts fighter with a karate background to win the K-1 Grand Prix.

    Titles won by Andy Hug :

    -> K-1 World Grand Prix Champion - 1996.

    -> K-1 World Grand Prix Finalist - 1997, 1998.

    > K-1 World Grand Prix Last 8 - 1994, 1999.

    > UKF World Super Heavyweight Champion 1994.

    Champion 1996.

    > WKA European Muay Thai Super Heavyweight
    Champion 1997/1998/1999/2000.

    The word legend is bandied about far too readily at times, but Andy Hug was indeed a true legend.

    What are your memories of Andy Hug? His fights? His life?

    ATG.
    One of my favorites to watch when they showed every Monday the old K1 fights in TV....
    And proved how Karate was effective against people from other martial arts as well.....

    What a tactical war. Bernado wouldn't quit. But Hug knew it would only take one more on that Beranado leg and it was over.

    I think the pair met 4 times splitting it 2 wins apiece.

    It's a tragedy both were taken far too soon.

    Andy died just a few months after this fight. He would only have one more fight after this a month later in July. In less than two months after his final fight Hug would be diagnosed with Leukaemia and in less than a week he would fall into a coma and die. One of the most tragic things to happen to a superbly skilled fighter.

    Staggering to think that only a few months after a performance like that Andy Hug was no more. How Andy withstood the sustained power of Crocop I'll never know. Lesser fighters would have caved in.

    Andy Hug was one of those rare quality fighters in a division that typically lacks quality, the heavyweights. He was always in shape, flexible and fast more like a middleweight than a heavy. He had that rare skill of taking the rigid art of Karate and making it practical and useful against MT in a full contact enviroment, the K-1 tourney and being succesful with it. He adapted his form of Katate into a powerful free flowing form, beautiful to watch. That axe kick! :scaredas:

    He really helped the K-1 build in rep internationally and was important for Karate at a time when Muay Thai was starting to become a recognized force and starting to dominate in full contact enviroments outside of Thailand such as kickboxing and K-1. Karate was stuggling big time in the 90s having been exposed as unpractical in the full contact arena, however Hug become the poster boy for Karate in a kickboxing age and went along way to save some face for the white pyjama brigade.

    Above all he always came to fight, always looked classy in the ring, always looked in shape and was a huge loss to the scene when he died. He had a massive impact and will always be remembered and missed by fight fans.

    Whenever I saw him fight outwardly I wanted him to lose cos I never had much respect for Karate, but secretly inside I'd admire him fight and part of me was happy when he won. He was a Heavyweight legend.

    Just a great back and forth battle with alot of heart shown by Sefo.

    That being said I've still yet to see the Feitosa fight, which from this highlight looks like ATG stuff.
