Word on the street was that James Toney routinely worked over heavyweights while as an aspiring middleweight, which is why he confidently predicted he would be a heavyweight champion one day, years and years before that was remotely feasible to us. Those stories never had any prominent names that I was aware of, probably just average heavyweight in and around the Detroit circuit.
