Huge southpaw fighter. Fought southpaw. Must have been 6'5 or so with a 80 some odd inch reach. Record looks like crap, but he managed some good wins. Sparked a debuting Michael Bentt in one, which is impressive considering Bentt was an extremely accomplish amateur. Jones also beat Carl William's in 92', and served as a longtime sparring partner for Holyfield, I believe.
OK Journeyman, was brave against Mercer and got another pay day against Seldon. The Williams result was more a case of how flaky The Truth was rather than how good Jones was.
Saw him many times on ESPN TOP RANK BOXING back in the 90's. First time I ever saw him was against a prospecting Mercer who was around 10-0. Al Bernstein and Barry Thompkins both chuckled over Jones undying will as the canvas was constantly being mopped with Jones, but how it was a good effort nonetheless. He was tall and on the skinny side. Mercer plowed through him for 7 rounds, until he tired in the 8th, when Jones finally got some shots off to win the last and final round of the match. But of course it was far too late to get a decision. The next time I saw him was against Seldon, only this time he did not survive to hear the final bell. The Williams fight wasn't much to speak of. Jerry gave a good effort, but carl looked like ****. They both did in fact. Jones was able to utilize the left hook ( Carl's achilles ), to floor him on 2 or 3 occasions. One fight that I truly feel he deserved to win was against a rising prospect named Alex Garcia. They fought for 12 rounds for either the USBA or NABF or some title, and it was a great effort on both men's part. I thought Jones deserved the nod, but it was given to Garcia. One month later I saw Jones fight journeyman Mark Wills, and I think it was the last time I ever saw him fight.
