A pure grappler, even one as phenomenal as Aoki, is never going to do well in today's UFC. Not because he's too one-dimensional or whatever (although against certain fighters that would be a problem), but because the cage completely favors wrestlers. I bet you a lot of guys who'd beat him in the cage (someone like Clay Guida for instance) would get subbed in a ring.
People make way more of a deal about cage/ring than there actually is to it. With Greco guys who use the cage to aid in grinding with dirty boxing and pummelling for hooks to score the takedown, yes, it can make a hefty difference. The cage doesn't make a **** to Aoki because he's not a clinch grinder and if anything it would allow him to stifle his opponent and work for a throw. The only way the cage affects him is if he gets crammed into it while on his back and can't effectively engage his hips. So, the real problem isn't the cage, it's that he can't wrestle for ****, couldn't punch his way out of a wet paper sack, and his Chin is ****ing abysmal.:deal

If you could read you'd see that I said he ISN'T a clinch fighter, therefore the cage would actually make him more effective when he's desperately looking for a takedown because you can more easily prevent an opponent from getting his hips out or pummeling. Secondly, the whole first video was a clinch that resulted from Aoki failing on an early attempt at a clinch takedown and being clueless on how to pummel on a shitty opponent who can't wrestle himself. The guy can't take down elite wrestlers in a cage or a ring. Get his **** out of your mouth and deal with it, fanboy.hi:
I meant to point out that the clinch happened on the ropes, a key part of the fights, leading to a a TD and submission. The whole process for a TD is very different against a cage wall. Clinch = crucial to Aoki's game, now go wash your mouth out with soap
The ropes aren't as conducive to a takedown as the cage is and Aoki sucks even when he's in his environment in a ring. Struggling to take down Wisniewski is a clear sign that it doesn't matter what the environment, he's not taking down guys like Melendez, Edgar, Maynard, and Penn and he's not going to survive standing against any of them. Hell, Penn tools him on the mat or standing and I would mortgage my home on it.
