One of the most gallant fighters I have EVER seen. Him coming out for round 7 in the Marciano fight. I just could not believe it. That sort of warrior class just does not seem to exist anymore. He was going to go out on his shield, or die trying. Archie Moore is one of the ATG's. He will always have my respect.
I too am a champion if I am to lose I will lose on the floor. If they made a film in which an ancient fighter was floored several times by a heavy hitting slugger and came back to ko him ,as Moore did to Durelle they would say it's too far fetched ,a cliché, yet he did it!
In the 8th round with The Rock, he hurt him, and won the round before his body gave out in the ninth! He raised his hands at the end of the eighth as if to say. I am a champion, I am a man. Archie was really something special.
While I think that Ezzard Charles was a better fighter than Archie Moore during his peak years, Moore was a terrific fighter for a much longer period of time than Charles. Moore's career is an astounding one. He had been active as a professional fighter for 17 years when he got his first shot at a world title during 1952, winning the world light-heavyweight championship from Joey Maxim, the reigning titleholder, in the process. As late as 1962, Moore was still recognized as the reigning titleholder in some circles! - Chuck Johnston
Moore said that in his waning years Charles suggested that they have a fourth fight.Moore declined saying," you just keep it for your grandchildren that you beat Ol Archie 3 times". Moore also said he declined a fight with the aging Louis ,because ," I respected him too much".
when i look at the oakland billy smith footage, and i see moores style as it appears to be, which is different to the older moore of his title reign..or to my eyes anyway....and the fact that years later he trained a young cassius clay...i think i see a definite influence on the style that clay (ali) adapted.
