I am an amateur boxer and fight orthodox... I am right handed but have always been somewhat ambidextrous in sports... I feel like I have good power when throwing a straight left from southpaw... are all southpaws normally left handed?

I feel like if I could fight southpaw effectively as a 6'1 JMW with good reach I could cause more problems for opponents.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't De La Hoya a natural left-hander that fights orthodox? I know it's the reverse of what the OP is asking but I don't see why it couldn't work both ways.

More southpaw greats than you think were right handed, hell, I think Marvin Hagler was converted.

pac is right handed but fights southpaw. he said he is ambidextrous in most things but boxing likes to fight southpaw.

me im going to give orthodox a try.

i right left handed and play all my sports right handed so it wont hurt to try.

If you're ambidextrous, learn to fight both ways.... It'll serve you well down the line...

I am a lefty for everything but i feel much more comfortable in the orthodox position. My jab and left hook feel so natural. Although i can also switch it up because i have no problem switching southpaw but i prefer orthodox.

Although there are some theorectical advantages to fighting southpaw, the disadvantages clearly make it a poor choice, if indeed that is a choice that you are capable of making. At the professional level matches are custom made, and you have to find your own opponents. Who wants to fight a south paw? If you have a problem getting fights, you will have a problem developing a career in boxing. Being a southpaw is one of the reasons that Joe Calzaghe didn't get the big fights until the end of his career.

Go orthodox, chances are you will regret chosing southpaw.

I'm right handed but my left hook is by far my most powerful punch. It doesn't matter much which arm is the strongest, as the arm contributes relatively little to the power of a punch anyway.

i'm a left handed orthodox boxer and love it. the snap it puts into my jabs and the natural power in the hook is nice. i've been putting effort into being able to switch hit if i need to because my straight right is nice but if im going in for the kill i use my straight left instead. also, i said before it puts snap into my jabs, but it also makes them very stiff if i want them to. some people i spar say my jab hurts the most which is odd but cool i guess.

Winky Wright is another. Almost entirely right-handed, which is why he's developed his style around the right jab from the southpaw position.

No, I myself am a right handed southpaw... but not on purpose. I write with my right hand, shoot guns with my left hand, kick with my right leg. I'm just very odd lol
