Dream match At Lightweight. Based on Whitaker's performances against: Ramirez, Nelson, Haugen, McGirt, Pineda, Chavez ect... Sweet Pea's defense was top's. His D against aggressove fighter's was amazing. Pea IMO might have the style to frustrate an Arguello into following him around the ring the entire fight and as a Lightweight Pea had some pop in his punch. that being said i'd expect a full distance fight. If it's a 15 rounder then I'd give more of an advantage to Alexis. (Experience) Tho Pea can defo do it for 15 aswell.. Overall Whitaker by UD. (in a 12 rd'er) (But Arguello can always catch him late in a 14th 15th rd K.O.)
SP..... you are a great poster......don't limit yourself. The fight Arguello Vs Fernandez was a 10 rounds fight..... Vilomar won a SD,.....if that fight would have been a 15 rounds fight (a title fight) AA would have ko Fernandez.... AA defeated Fernandez in another 10 rounds fight and Arguello sent Fernandez to the canvas in the six (if memory serves). When AA was defending his title......he was unstopable.....
Unbeaten you mean. It's a handy stat but i'd hardly say it means he would have definitely beaten the likes of Duran, Pryor, Whitaker and co if he was defending his title vs such calibre.
To be a puncher and take Whittaker on you'd have to be an elite puncher at 135 (almost tight at the weight). Arguello was talented enough to put some on Pernell over 15 but he wasn't an elite banger at 135. Also Alexis was a slow starter which is just how Pernell liked it. He gets a few rounds ahead and then can be more mindful of his aggression, reducing further the opportunities to tag him cleanly.
I'm with the consensus...Whitaker by UD. I've never seen either of the Arguelllo/Vilomar Fernandez fights, and it's hard to envision someone totally dominating the proceedings against Arguello. Alexis would score, and those punches would defintely be felt by Whitaker...Pernell may even be knocked down (flash) doing one of his dipsey do's. But Pernell's great defense, speed, unorthadoxy, and his underated toughness win the day for him.
As a guy who proclaims himself to be Alex's #1 Fan, I have to agree with the majority here that say that the style of Pea is all wrong for him. Too fast and too good on defense. Vilomar Fernandez couldn't carry Pea's jock.......and we all know what happened there.
Ok, the McGirt fight was close. And I'll accept that it was even in Whitaker's prime, even though Whitaker was better at lightweight, obviously. But it is pretty irrelevant to Whitaker's prospects against Arguello.
