Baer would destroy Cooney before the 3rd round. One of those looping rights would crash on that not-so-sturdy chin and it's time for the ref to show off his math skills.
I'm going to go with Cooney here. Prime Cooney's left hand was awesome, he could hook off the jab and uppercut off the jab as well. Plus Cooney for a tall guy was a viscious body puncher, and an underrated boxer. Baer in the footage I've seen had great power but was a bit of a wild swinger. I'm going with Cooney in 4.
Gotta say Cooney, he had his limitations but he brought some mighty powerful tools/skills to the fight. Cooney was no Carnera, his record was earned not 'assisted like Primos. Cooney lasted 13 rounds against Holmes after a 13 month period of inactivity from boxing. I would rate Holmes a much better fighter than Baer, so can't see a prime Baer KOing Cooney.
It's not out of the question. The only fighter who Max ever faced who had power comparable to Cooney's was a very green Joe Louis who destroyed him in four rounds. Gerry for all his shortcomings was a large man with loads of power and underrated boxing skills. something tells me that if the Spinks and Foreman bouts never happened ( and when Gerry was shot ) he'd get picked in more fantasy fights.
Agreed. It generally took technically sound fighters to take Cooney apart. only one of them fought him when he was prime ( and that was after 13 months of inactivity and still turned out to be a war. ) I've seen amateurs with better ring generalship than Max Baer.
It could be a war. I see it as ruddock v morrison. Cooney in the ruddock role dropping max a couple of times, then round about the sixth baer smashing cooney to the floor.
