Barney Ross - Discussion

Just watching through all the footage I have of Ross.

Now I think this guy is absolutely superb, one of the best boxers of all time. His skill set is absolutely fantastic yet everything is kept technically perfect.

In this fight Ross demonstrates his full repertoire, in fact this is his most balanced performance on film IMO.

His offence is superb; everything is worked off the jab. The jab is not only used as a rangefinder, but to start the combinations by throwing off Petrolle’s balance as well as being used defensively by keeping Petrolle at distance. The combinations set up by the jab are superb; the right hand is throwing straight and almost always followed by a left hook. The only criticism you can attribute these combos is he doesn’t go to the body enough, although he does later on.

As well as his offence his defense is equally as eye catching. He uses his movement expertly to avoid Petrolle’s long hooks before quickly stepping back into range with left hook counters. When in the pocket he keeps his head to one side with his hands high and slips punches. As well as blocking shots.

That is just one performance; I would like to here your guy’s thoughts on it.

Also I would like to get a discussion going on Ross in general.

 

Oh I have this fight on DVD. If you don't have 45 Fantastic Fights of the Century then I highly recommend it.

I have a 20 min of this fight, all ten rounds.

I put this as his 2nd best fight on film, I belive the III McLarin fight tops the Petrolle fight. But thats just me, Ross was dealing with a bigger skill Jimmy McLarin, and was able to out box Jimmy to win the welterweight title back.

 

I agree Dempsey that is his best performance, i just think this fight shows off his full skillset and illustrates the point I was making. It was you who sent me the film of this bout anyway.

 

GPater: I agree about Ross. I think he is often widely underrated, when it comes to ATG lists and the like. For me, he should be somewhere between 8 and 12. Any lower is unacceptable.

I have that dvd too, it's ****ing ace!!

 

It's great it has a bit of everything for everyone. I dusted it off this morning and will watch a few fights this week.

 

I rank Ross in the top 20, maybe 15 P4P ATGs. What's probably most impressive about his career is that he won the WW title and made several defenses while only natural LW/jr.WW himself. I would've loved to have seen a match between Ross and Benny Leonard to see who was the best Jewish fighter of all time.

 

I think I'd rate the Canzoneri rematch as his best performance (on film, at the very least) myself.

Well, and it was still close, just shows how great Canzoneri himself was.


Ross was great and I think it´s astonishing that the people of his day didn´t think so but instead thought of him as an average, workman-like fighter. I´d rank him inside my Top10 for sure.

I can remember one guy on here who made a decent case for him beeing number one quite a while back. I think this stretches it a bit but even that a an argument can be made is amazing. :good

 

after the armstrong fight he said something like for the first 4 rounds he felt good then he i think he said he had nothing in his legs ,he even said to the ref dont stop it this is my last fight i will never fight again if you dont stop it. during the war he ko'd a 200lb samoan warrior with 16oz gloves

yes, ross was a beautiful boxer with a lions heart as shown at guadalcanal as well as his fights in the ring
