another my old grandad used to talk about while he'd smoke his pipe looking into an open fire... he said he had a skull that was twice the thickness and bone density thicker than the average white man, which meant he could take huge punishment. he would love telling the story of the {first i think} joe gans fight and how the day was so hot.. i am reminded after finding it on youtube.. not sure what i am looking at here though...it appears to be the fight, then the end of the fight and then back to earlier in the bout again... Nelson probably had the best stamina of any fighter in history. This guy could maintain high round for round punch outputs over 45 rounds.
In fight to the finish bouts he was among the most difficult to beat due to his inhuman stamina and durability. Over 10-20 rounds he was a much less daunting task due to his crudeness and lack of skill, even by the era's standard.

He could take a vicious beating and worked to the body constantly. As said, not much of a 10 or 15 round fighter, but he was extremely difficult to beat in a fight to the finish. The man just had no quit in him, no matter how many times he was knocked down. Nelson vs Wolgast is an incredible fight, a testimony to the stamina that the late 1800's and early 1900's fighters had. Sure there were long fights with hardly any punches thrown, but there were also all-out wars that ended with the loser (and often the winner as well) battered senseless. Both Wolgast and Nelson paid a heavy price for their battles later in life.
I love the story of him bathing in the Lemonade for the Willard Dempsey bout and the vendor selling the stuff anyway.
