With day before weigh ins, Benavidez can come into this fight over 180 pounds. He fights Marciano instead of Rex Layne. Who wins?

Hardly an indicator that he would beat Marciano.

Marciano destroys him quickly, is charged with murder and beats the rap after a lengthy trial.

 

Benavidez on sheer modernness, nothing to do with skill, technique, power or any kind of boxing ability whatsoever, just pure modernness.

 

Some folks don't understand that with the current weight divisions and day-before weigh in, Marciano is a light-heavy. a generational great light-heavy to be sure, but a light-heavy.

Most heavies didn’t worry about making weight.

Marciano trained to drop weght.

He couldn’t have made LHW without being seriously weight drained.

He could have made 180 and Benavidez could have come in at 180….a fair weight compromise.

And Benavidez woul get KO’d.

The sport has levels.

 

In Marciano's day, they weighed in same day. Today, they weigh in the day before, so they dehydrate for the weigh in and spend a day recovering from the water cut. Light heavies today enter the ring at around 185, which is what Marciano entered the ring weighing. There's no difference.

Marciano was 5'10" and enters the ring around 185. Benavidez is 6'2", probably came in around 185. Bivol (undisputed at light heavy) is 6'0" and enters the ring around 185, confirmed.

Benavidez is the bigger man. Want to say Marciano would beat him? Go ahead. I might even agree. But stop with this "hE wAs A hEaVYweIgHT!!" thing. He was 185lbs with same day weigh in. That's what modern day light heavies weigh when they enter the ring. The rules were different then.

 

Anything over 175 in Marciano's day was a HW.

And Marciano fought in his own time within the rules of that era, same day weigh in.

He was a Heavyweight.

 

He WAS a heavyweight, he isn’t a heavyweight now. He literally doesn’t fit the definition anymore.

 

He was a Heavyweight for his entire professional career.

He isn't a heavyweight now on account of being dead for more than fifty years.

 

"Heavyweight" today doesn't have the same meaning it did in Marciano's time. He is no longer a heavyweight. If he is teleported to today's era in his prime, he quite literally would not be allowed to fight against a heavyweight.

 

I understand how everyone is on a Benavidez roll but I see that soft body and cringe at what Marciano would have done to him ..
