A couple of his lesser known but impressive performances were against Johnny Turner and Tony Chiavernini. Turner had a reputation as a deadly puncher, and one of his previous knockout victims was Frankie Benitez. After the match, Wilfred scoffed at the suggestion that he was aiming to avenge his big brother, but in a surprising reversal of roles, he adopted a stalking posture from the outset as Turner tried to play the cutie. In round two, Benitez decked him with a left hook, then proceeded to carve up his victim's face en route to a ninth round stoppage. El Radar demonstrated how damaging he could be when advancing forward. This was his first outing after SRL, and he reasserted himself impressively. Letting him lead and take the initiative didn't work as well as some thought it might. In contrast to Ali's dismal showing with Young, Wilfred seemed comfortable in the role of aggressor. His next time in the ring, he took on Chiaverini. Unlike Turner, Tony carried the fight right to Benitez against the ropes, and got picked apart in what was probably the most impressive counterpunching stoppage win of Wilfred's career. Chiaverini was never close to going down, but it seemed like he was being outscored 20-1. (A punch for punch analysis of this one would provide a stunning disparity in accuracy. Tony attempted and missed a huge number of shots.) Benitez was better against Shields than SRL, Cuevas or Hearns. He showed right handed power in dethroning Hope, and left handed power in dropping Turner early. He could slip and counter off the ropes, and he could stalk and cut off the ring. Between SRL and Hearns, he produced some excellent and varied displays of ability.
Could Wilfred have been considered to be a greater all-around fighter than Wilfredo Gomez in the early part of his career?

His two best performances are against Cervantes, a GREAT fighter who Benitez beat at just 17 years of age to win the junior welterweight title, and his shutout of Duran. Duran was so frustrated at the end, instead of congratulating Benitez, he proceeded to back away from Benitez when Benitez wanted to hug him. Funny ass ****.
Benitez: "Never has so little been done with so much!" I say this because he's always been one of my all-time favorite fighters. I could say exactly the same thing about Eddie 'Mustapha' Gregory, another one of my all-time favs... They both IMO could have gone down in boxing history as two of the ALL TIME pvp Greats!
