Benitez's Greatest Showings

Well, like I said earlier he has quite a few. Probably the most famous was the Cervantes fight. Decisions over Bruce Curry, Harold Weston, Randy Shields, Carlos Palomino. Above that even more with Maurice Hope and Roberto Duran. Maybe he just has the style to throw off most of the good fighters out there but still, I wasnt going against Hearns or Hamsho. Probably passed his peak after 1983

 

His all time best performance was his upset of Cervantes IMO.

After that it was hit and miss, with some top notch performances (ie: Palomino, Hope, Duran) alternating with poor or so-so ones (Curry I, Weston I). But the Cervantes fight remains the one where he best put all his tools together IMO.

Never have I ever seen anybody make opponents miss so terribly (save for Pernell Whitaker) the way Benitez did.

 

Duran was his best. Duran was motivated in that fight too, but Benitez put on one of the best boxing clinics of all time in that fight.

 

The Cervantes, Duran, Palomino and Hope fights stand out.

 

No one can discredit Benitez on the Duran fight. Duran had many years left, and two more titles to win, Benitez was magnificent in the Duran fight...as they said at the time, it was "ice over fire". He was a genius that night.

I've always felt his Cervantes performance was his finest.

 

he was great against Cervantez especially nearer the end i think around round 13 he really turns on a clinic on Cervantes who a decent fighter dosent have a clue what to do its amazing stuff.

 

He was great in the Palomino fight. But the kayo over Maurice Hope was brutal! A tooth even bounced across the ring!

 

Favourite performance was against Pete Ranzany.
