Bennett's fracture (broken thumb)

Broke the base of my thumb sparring, otherwise known as a Bennett's fracture. I imagine a number of you have done this so I have a few questions.

When did you get back boxing?

How can you better protect the thumb?

I left hook a lot and have hurt my thumb several times. I'm now worried that after the fracture it will be weaker.

I seem to damage the lower bit of my thumbs quite a bit,sickening pain normally caused by elbow blocks.
