Louis, Tyson, Holyfield also had great jab when they used it.

Many HW's of 80's - 90's had pretty good jabs -
Tubbs, Moorer, Seldon among them.

 

Liston had the greatest jab imo

 

Liston had a big mans jab. Not overly quick but long and heavy.

Holmes had the finest overall jab. Snapping, laser quick and accurate.

I liked Moorers southpaw jab as well.

Tyson for his size was a fairly effective jabber. His use of timing and movement allowed him outjab much bigger men like Tucker.

 

The jab of liston is overrated. Not saying that was not very good but there are some as good and dont get the credit.foreman had a heavier jab than Charles liston,ali had a better jab than sonny, just it was not as hard.pinklon Thomas had a very good jab.

 

Foreman said Liston was the best jab he ever seen. He said it was better than his and Ali's. Obviously that doesn't mean it's true, but thats what he said.

The greatest jab was prime Ali's jab. It's not close.

It came so fast it was very difficult to slip and it had ripping and slashing effects. Holmes, Liston and Louis jabs were possibly harder blows but that not what a jab is all about.

Ali's ability to move laterally and throw that jab with speed and accuracy allowed him to hit opponents at angles, slipping punches and countering. In effect his body movement kept him out of the way of oppositions punches and created openings for his own jab/combinations.

 

Different fighters rely on their jabs for different outcomes. Ali based his whole style around his jab and feet (at least to begin with). Just because his ****nal was so jab reliant doesn't necessarily make it the best and "not even close"...

I would put Tunney, Holmes, Louis and Klitschko up there as guys who worked their jab into their ****nal to bring the exact outcome they wanted. Their domination (and all three were as dominant as they come) was based first and foremost on the performance of their jabs.

 

Wrong again. Typical.

Ali's speed which was unmatched and ability to move and hit with that jab with speed, accuracy and cutting power made that punch the best. The flatfooted jab of Liston, Klit and to some extent Holmes made their punch easier to defend against at a high level. It would be much more easily timed and countered. These flatfooted jabs would be slipped or hit air as Ali moved laterally while at the Same time landing his own jab which was faster and more accurate.

Ali's jab was the classic boxers jab that came from Corbett, through Tunney to Ali who perfected it. It's the classic textbook jab originally taken from the sport of fencing.

The Liston and Holmes jab were more akin to the Louis jab. A punchers jab which is much easier to counter and falls away from the classic and original form.

Question is what's better and head to head prime Ali would nullify the Louis, Liston or Klit jab. He would do this via lateral movement, head movement and his own faster more accurate jab which at its best was so quick it was difficult to defend against. Ali's jab trumps the puncher type jab every time
