Best Jack Johnson books?

    Scholarly preferred.
    I'm writing a historiography of Jack Johnson. Basically documenting how he has been written about over the years and drawing conclusions about why.

    I have some good writings including:

    Black Champion
    Bad ******!
    Black Dynamite 4
    Papa Jack

    and some journal articles as well.

    Does anyone know of a good place to look for Jack Johnson scholarship, particularly with an original interpretation of his significance?

    Has anyone written a historiography about him before? I'm not having luck finding any.

    The rise and fall of Jack Johnson is amazing and very well researched (the footnotes at the bottom of each page are very good). I'm half way through it now, and i'm loving it tbh

    Excellent calls ! Dead on ... not the basic bios (101 Versions) but books that detail the sociological impact of the man, the era and how they interconnected.

    "My Life and Battles" An indirect autobiography of Jack from beginning all the way up leading to the Jeffries fight. Jack was an interesting man...

    Unforgivable Blackness sounds exactly what you're looking for, very well researched and has lots of extracts and quotes from newspapers etc from back then.

    The upcoming Pollack biography might be one to watch.

    Ironicaly, this might be the only one in the series where the information missing (the fighters life outside the ring), might be the most important part!

    How come Jack Johnson is not considered the greatest heavyweight of all-time..? I mean, surely if you really think about it. Its a no contest..? when you pitch him up against Rocky Marciano, Lennox Lewis, Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, Muhammad Ali, Larry holmes..?

    I mean seriously..? some of his fights when on for what..? 50 rounds..? with little mitts on..?

    How would somebody like Jack Johnson do under modern day rules during the 70's, 80's, 90's..?

    I will necessarily include life outside the ring to the extent that such things had an impact on his fight life. I think for Johnson, aspects of his story such as race and his wives and legal troubles are such an integral part of the story, and part of his fight career, that they must be included. I'll do my best to give it all a new and improved angle, and shed further light on the subjects.
