I was watching Jack Johnson vs. James J. Jeffries on youtube and the commentator noted that Tex Rickard asked both President Taft and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to referee the fight. Either would be an ATG boxing moment, especially when one considers how cool President Taft was (he kept a cow on the White House lawn and rebuilt the bath to take account of his huge size).

Which other (seriously proposed) special guest referees would have been amazing?

I'm sure that Conan-Doyle would have liked to have been alive to referee a Holmes fight......! It would have been elementary.

I'd like to see Moyer-Giambra for the inaugural WBA SWW Title fight in 1962. The only time Liston ever went the championship distance was as a third man. Also, Cokes-Olguin, the one time Sonny had to make the call to halt the match.

Maybe Liston wouldn't have even needed to say "break." He'd just fix his glare at the combatants, and split them apart with force field vision.

It was never proposed, but imagine Louis Schmelling II with Special Guest Referee Adolph Hitler.
