I think you're right sean. Joe doesn't exactly need to be fighting for the money anymore. He doesn't have an extravagant lifestyle to maintain, his family is sorted for life and he'll get well paid whatever the offer is. The only reason he's still in the game at his age is the love of it. For that reason alone, it's enough to take the fight. I get the impression that he's said to Warren "I want the fight, accept the best deal that you can get". Fwank owes him that much.

 

Hopkins doesn't need this fight at all. He is already an ATG in the books, he has $30 million in the bank and makes a few million a year on promoting alone. He's the LHW champ, and Joe called HIM out. Why the **** should Hopkins go to Wales?

This was before the Kessler fight where Joe's stock has risen.

Nobody's saying Hopkins should come to Wales. Calzaghe and Warren both stated that they're prepared to go to the USA of America for this fight. All we need to agree is the money.

 

It doesn't matter to me whether Hopkins fights Calzaghe or not. I just want to see Calzaghe come out of his comfort zone and fight in the states.

 

calzaghe has a big advantage fighting at home i agree.

its why so many big name american fighters refuse to fight overseas and give up there home advantage .

 

I understand. But the way I look at it is I rather not travel several thousand miles to see a good fighter fight. No reason why elite fighters cant fight in different continents once in a while.

when i first got into boxing in the 70`s and 80`s it was commonplace for big names to fight here there and everywehere be they americans/europeans or asians.

i even remember loads of top british boxers having to go to places like nigeria and ghana to defend there commonwealth belts.

but now tv and status rule all.

The only time he makes good PPV number is when he is fighting exciting fighters like Tito or DLH. And I will bet that it is not because of Hopkins.

They should split the purse 50-50 down he middle. If any of them asking for more, then it is clear to me that that guy doesn't realy want to make the fight happen.

 

In theory, it should be 50/50, but Joe had better hurry the **** up and make the deal before RJJ/Trinidad fight if he really wants it. Hopkins can stay on the US merry-go-round forever if he wanted to so Joe needs to bite the small financial bullett and just accept. That is if he's as desperate as he says to make this particular fight happen.

 

60/40 is fair deal for JC/Warren. They should grab it with both hands.

 

On Page 3 of the recent thread 'What if Calzaghe calls Hpkins bluff and agrees to fight in the USA?' I predicted that Hopkins would then try and wriggle out of the fight by insisting on the lions share of the purse, something he KNOWS Frank Warren won't agree to.But what if Warren and JC DO agree? Where can Hopkins run then?

I don't think this fight will happen. Hopkins would much prefer to stay on the cosy US Seniors Tour, and fight the Jones/Trinidad winner

Fair how? Hopkins is champion at the weight it will be at. Hopkins is the bigger draw (no way could Joe do the PPV numbers Bernard does everytime out...).

60/40 is MOOOOORE than fair. This is in no way an outpricing tactic.

Roy offerred Bernard 60/40 on live tv, then backtracked to 70/30 during negotiations (60/40 was fair...70/30 was laughable). Bernard said 50/50. On top of that, Roy said no catchweight, Bernard wanted one.

Hopkins on most lists is ranked ABOVE Joe p4p (tho I have Joe above him in my own...) But p4p has nothing to do with earning right...would Cotto deserve more than Oscar??? Exactly...

On top of that, what does Joe coming over here (something he has stated that he wants to do) to fight a proven ATG have to do with the split they will get?

Sorry bro...Calzaghe (as I mentioned) is one of my favorite fighters...as is Bernard, but I am just bringing up FACTS to show how awfully biased the opinion of the Calzaghe maniacs/Hopkins haters are becoming.

And the Wright fight.....305,000 PPV buys. So yes, if down the road (which you are wrong...they are not in negotiations) they wanted a rematch to happen, they could put it back on PPV (but it wont happen...just answering your question).

Try to use facts next time. And remember, if someone is being truthful, yet disagreeing with you....it doesnt make them biased.

Yes, he did. Long before the point Bernard called him out after the Wright fight.

He said something about (I dont want to misquote him so I am generalizing) wanting to have a BIG fight, in the US on the BIG stage, against a BIG name before his career was over.

Now, going on that...is there a bigger name in and around his weight class than Bernard?

Wrong, they offered Bernard 3m to come to overseas, fight Joe in his backyard and move up to 168.

This was while Bernard was in the middle of his defense streak at MW (so no that would be 2 weight classes, not 3...at the time) and was still the bigger draw. He said he would take the 3m if the fight was here....or he wanted 6m to cross the pond.

And again, everyone one of you are forgetting the most important thing during the previous negotiations. Hopkins was still the bigger draw, the bigger name and the more accomplished fighter.

Joe does want the money and the exposure that will come from this fight. That is why he said he would fight Hop ANYWHERE. These rejections are coming from you guys...not your fighter.

AND, for the last time, other than that he is undefeated, he has NO BARGAINING POWER to demand more than 40% from Hopkins. I have already shown this with facts, all your saying back is "He is my favorite fighter, he is the best, he deserves more money!"...and thats not a valid reason, sorry.

And you guys are also faaaaaaaaaar overlooking just how great Hopkins still is.

Watch the Manfredo fight, he said it in the prefight interviewing/build up. And also, after the Kessler fight, Joe said he would fight Bernard ANYWHERE (I will look for a link later...gotta head to work in like 5 mins.).

If there is a backtrack going on, its not just from Warren.

Again 3m if its in the US. They offered 3m for the fight to happen over there.

Listen, I love Calzaghe....but you guys really arent looking at the facts here. Go read my original reply in this post, I state many reasons (that were ignored by the thread starter) why Hopkins deserves more.....

And again, the only people bringing up that Joe wont cross the pond and dont think the money is fair are the posters and fans on here. Not Joe or Warren.

From a boxing fans perspective, this is a SUPER FIGHT! A MEGA FIGHT! One that makes the most sense legacy wise for both men. Instead of making excuses and deflecting blame, we should all be praying that this fight goes through...as if it does, we will be the biggest winners.

There was a lot more to the Hopkins/Cal fight not happening than some posters on this board are saying. I don't think anyone outside of the fighter's camps and Showtime know what really happened. This fight was part of a proposed multiple fight deal Bernard was negotiating with Showtime. I don't claim to know all the details, but it wasn't as simple as Bernard agreeing to a purse and then doubling his demands at the last minute. Bernard's side of the story was that Showtime made changes to the deal at the last minute.
