I just picked up on ringtv.com that Bill Dettloff, THE RING magazine’s Senior Writer, is working on a biography of Ezzard Charles.

I figured there's probably a few old timers on ESB who could feed him some good info for his work.

This is brilliant news - never a more deserving subject so late down the line

Ezzards cousin, and former manager, Richard Christmas, hangs around my gym a bit. He would be a great resource.

I may be able to put them in touch if he is interested.

Richard is a real old timer who probably doesnt do the computer thing though.

Why did Charles find it so hard to get recognition whilst he was active? He looks great on film.

Because he came after Joe Louis.

And because he was vanilla (While Louis was an exciting KO artist).

Yep, a bit of a Dempsey-Tunney underwhelming type of reception.... Cox says that Charles was "too subtle and pure of a sweet scientist to capture the imagination of the public".... There might be some truth to that.

man, a work that needs to be done. it's amazing how many great figures from this great sport have so little written on them.

Charles, from what I've read was a very decent, interesting man, at least from my point of view...with "Tunneyish" habits like reading, painting and playing a mean standup bass...he was, from what I've read of him, which unfortunately, is not a lot, a classy guy...and along with him being one of my favorite fighters, is quite a combination. He was a perfect fit for that greatest of decades, IMO.

Anything that brings more light on Charles should only benefit the image of boxing.
