Hughes was humiliated last night. He should definitely retire, but no doubt will get more cards. That is what BJ should have done to that little punk Edgar, but for some reason he can't overcome his crouchy boxing style.
If you look at classic boxing styles I think you see why Penn struggled against Edgar. Penn tends to fight like a puncher - well-rounded, likes the jab and uppercut, seeks to weardown opponents before going in for the kill. Edgar on the other hand is an out-fighter, maintaining distance but rapdily moving in to score with quick jabs and takedowns. The boxing formbook would say that the out-fighter usually beats the puncher in pretty much the same way that Edgar would win both of his fights against Penn.
Lets not get too carried away. In his last couple of fights Hughes has fallen in love with is stand up against guys that are basically ground fighters who couldn't get it to the ground. I was wondering if that was going to happen, but I had hoped that someone in his camp would remind him of who he was fighting and how good his boxing is. Penn threw a simple counter right just like he did a hundred times against GSP and Edgar, only this time there was someone slow and dumb enough to be at the end of it with his jaw in the air. Lets not get carried away with the "Penn is back!!!" crap just yet. Penn/Fitch is a great fight. I've been wanting to see Penn against a legit 170lber who's not GSP for years now. I can't wait.

Penn was sharp and quickly. Within 20 seconds he could time Hughes jab and counter. Some guys spend round after round trying to get their timing and range right to land what BJ did. Awesome fighter who shouldn't be counted out but Edgar is a really tough style. So fast and so activee. He never could get his timing or range right with Frankie.
This is because Edgar is an accumalative puncher, as in, he never really sets his feet. He moves and punches at the same time which means he is never going to KO a guy but also not going to get hit much either. Hughes, even in only 20 seconds, really looked like a wrestler trying to strike. he shouldn't have even tried to strike with BJ. Problem is that BJ is possibly the hardest guy to takedown in MMA history.
