Have some background in martial arts....TKD, Karate, some basic Judo stuff...when I was younger....but nothing too advanced. Looking to maybe get into some BJJ now, though I am considerably older from my other experiences (34 now). Looking to start some basic training maybe after the summer, and am trying to get back into somewhat decent shape before getting tossed around and choked out frequently. I am not worried about basic strength and conditioning stuff.....but getting my flexibility to a point in which it wouldn't be a horrendous liability to "hitting the ground running" is a bit of a confusion for me. I know dynamic stretching is good on training days, but if you have an off day, should I be static stretching? Not really sure the best and smartest way to prepare for getting twisted all over the place.
I advocate dynamic stretching pre work out and static stretching post work out. If you are not training like an athlete then I think you need to throw in some static stretching pre workout. I do weights once a week and my body is mangled so dynamic stretching just won't prepare me for my work out. I've read a really good study about static stretching. They got 2 groups of normal people - 1 static and 1 placebo. They might of had a dynamic group too. After 6 weeks of stretching all the stretching peoples numbers shot up on not just flexibility but their jump and their strength! These people didn't do weights or anything else, just stretching!

sweet, thanks...and yes, i read that static stretching (not pre-workout, just by itself) was adding strength too
