Peter Heller's,"In this corner" is a great read, forty world champs in their own words. It's like a social history of America going back to the likes of Willie Ritchie and Gunboat Smith. Smith's desription of his fight with Jess Willard is hilarious.
How good is it? I was going to buy it last year, but got put off by some people saying that it's not really about "facing Tyson" but more about the fighters who faced him. (??)
Jim Corbets "Roar of the crowd" is very good, particularly his account of the marathon with Peter Jackson. The Roosevelt I know by MIke Donovan is a fantastic window back in time. His interactions with the President, John L and the nonpariel Dempsey are all good. to name a couple
Hands of Stone book on Duran is a quality read, as is the Atlas book. I've just started reading 4 Kings, about Hagler, Hearns, Duran and Leonard.
Hands of Stone is not an Autobiogrophy, neither is Four Kings. A lot of the stuff in Atlas is bull****.
If you like Joe, then you need to look on amazon for an old book, the first Joe Frazier biography by Phil Pepe.. Its called (Come out Smoking) Its a fabulous book, very gripping and was written in the 1970's.. When i was about 11 i read this book and didn't know the outcome of the Ali v Frazier 1 fight.. I read the round by round descriptive in this book and i swear i was sweatting reading intensely.. It was such an exciting read.. great rare black & white photos too..........
That can be great, i like reading battle reports. Although i couldn't imagine living without high quality video of them, i can imagine the excitement of listening to a big fight on the radio.
The fighter's give their accounts of what it was like stepping in with Mike as well as some background on their career and any other encounters with him later on. I thought it was great personally.
You know what i know a lot about mike and read almost every article about his career, I worked with Tyson and Giachetti in 97 for a short while and know more than most about all surrounding the guy... Given that... I found the book very good, it had a lot of things you never hear about how where the fighters live now , how they felt and how they saw mike going into thier respective battles.. It very affordable and a very funny bok in a lot of ways.. trust me, when you open the book , make sure you have a lot of time, you wont wanna leave it alone, it s like a curiosity box.. Tyrell Biggs is very good in it, Sam Scaff.. Pinklon too, they talk in depth.. God Bless..
