Throw guys like Ali/Holmes out of the window. Holmes had the best jab in HW history, but he was a physical specimen and an ATG. Few people would be able to get away with holding their hands down like Holmes. Ali was completely unorthodox and someone no one should try to emulate.

A lot of these depend on who you're teaching. I'll just do HW's.

    Jab-Zora Folley

    Body punching-Marciano, Frazier

Defense-Tim Witherspoons not a bad choice.

Footwork-Depends on your style. I like Louis, Frazier especially.

Left hook-A lot of good left hookers. Tyson, Louis. Frazier's was weird but if you can master his long hook it's a nice weapon.

Straight Right-Lennox had a great straight right, Tyson's against Holmes were beautiful. Rocky's Suzie Q.

Uppercuts-Tyson, Louis, Bowe or Lewis if you're a big guy

    Combinations-Joe Louis

these are all great assets but what makes a great fighter a truly magnificent fighter are other things. for example determination. even if you are way behind on points the will and the capacity to go on for the win (frazier being a good example of that) killer-instinct or sheer agression (whatever you call it) dempsey and duran being good exampls of that. ring-generalship and the capacity to addept to you're opponent (ali as a top ring general for example)

Tommy Loughran may have been a prime example of one to learn about all of those things, with the use of the right hand being somewhat sparing, however.

The straight right is a relatively simple punch in boxing. The thing that sets one apart from others is timing and craftiness. Max Schmeling was a master in both, and had an extra-natural sense in setting up the punch. It was just intuition at its finest.

Not as great as the men mentioned already, but Vernon Forrest did a lot of things very well.

Jab- There are numerous fighters that have exceptional jabs, but not all of these jabs can be imitated. Ali, Holmes, and even Foreman all have different but effective jabs. Those jabs are also dependent upon the deliverer's physical attributes. You may need speed, power, a great chin, or all of these to drop it after throwing. I would recommend watching Joe Louis and Oscar de la Hoya.

Body Punching- Julio Cesar Chavez, Mike McCallum, and Pernell Whitakerare all good in this regard.

Defense- Many fighters with great defenses have exceptional reflexes, and do things others simply can't. I would recommend Roberto Duran, a young Mike Tyson, and Winky Wright for things all fighters can do. The latter part of Bernard Hopkins' career deserves a mention as well.

Footwork- Watch Pernell Whitaker in his last couple lightweight fights and onward, but realize certain things can be thrown out. Whitaker was trained by Georgie Benton for the majority of his career. Benton had a specific theory for effective boxing, as most great trainer do. Benton placed his stamp on Whitaker, like D'mato did Tyson and Patterson. Benton believed a fighter should constantly circle his opponent, but stay within punching distance while doing so. Whitaker began doing this almost to the letter at the latter part of his lightweight reign. Whitaker also widened his legs, cross stepped, dipped down real low, and numerous things that not everyone can do. Also watch Julio Cesar Chavez. Read what I said here for more: http://www.eastsideboxing.com/forum/showthread.php?t=170473
I am also impressed by the post 37 year old Bernard Hopkins here too.

Left hook (right if south paw)- Joe Louis for delivery and Mike Tyson for torque. Tyson sometimes threw a wide hook that those with lesser speed are unable to get away with. Observe Tyson's front leg and hip inclusion in turning his hook over.

Straight right (left if south paw)- One of my favorite offensive fighters, again, Joe Louis.

Uppercuts- Have I mentioned Joe Louis before? Juan Manuel Marquez and Antonio Margarito deserve mentioning.

Combinations- Joe Louis again, JC Chavez, Whitaker, Mike McCallum, and Mike Tyson.

Fighting on the backfoot- Floyd Mayweather Jr.

    Sneaky tricks- Bernard Hopkins

    *Infighting*- JC Chavez, Bernard Hopkins
