I like Merchant. Somewhere in any fight he will get into a fight with another announcer. Funny stuff. Especially when Big George use to work with him. If the fight was a snooze, Merchant would shake things up either during the fight or post fight. His interviews with Hopkins were legendary...
Hope I'm not high-jacking....but my personal favorites were Gil Clancy, Dan Dierdorff and Ray Leonard. They called fights with no bias. Mike Tyson the few times I heard him was on point as well. For exciting hollering, Joe Tessitore...provided Atlas wasn't there to persuade him.

No disrespect to Rummy. It is just that I liked Merchant. With warts and all he would make me laugh in my beer. Hell, I wish him well.
It’s not fair to compare Rumsfeld to Larry Merchant. Larry is part of the history of boxing and is, in fact, its poet laureate. Rumsfeld’s a good kid and we should support him. But there is no reason to compare them at all. Who are you going to compare Rumsfeld to next, Howard Cosell and Don Dunphy?
Merchant is more dramatic and can spin an angle or a story better. Rumsfeld actually knows what he's talking about. Depends on what you're looking for.
