  2. Boxing Mt. Rushmoore should be the "Founding Fathers." The guys that put boxing on the map.

John L. Sullivan, Joe Louis, Sugar Ray Robinson, Muhammad Ali

    Langford, Greb, Robinson, Ali

Armstrong loses out to Ali purely because Ali was the most high-profile boxer ever.

If I was designing it today, I would put Sullivan, Dempsey, Louis, and Ali on there. This mountain would be for serious boxing fans, casual boxing fans, and even for non-boxing fans to visit.

    1. As the first Queensberry Heavyweight Champion, John L. Sullivan fills in for George Washington. He was extremely popular. For decades, long after his death, people said "Shake the hand that shook the hand of a man who shook the hand of John L. Sullivan." He was larger than Life, just as George Washington was.

    2. Then, after 50 years of solid general popularity, Jack Dempsey takes Thomas Jefferson's position, because from 1920 through about 1970, almost any school kid (in the United States and a lot of other countries) would have known who Jack Dempsey was, just as they would have recognized who Thomas Jefferson was.

    3. Joe Louis assumes Abraham Lincoln's position, again due to his immense popularity for many decades. I don't think I have ever heard anyone say anything bad about Joe Louis, and even most non-boxing fans know who he was. In a boxing history sense, he fits in well with the image of Abe Lincoln.

    4. Then comes Muhammad Ali, who for many years was (and still is) one of the most recognized celebrities on the planet. He goes in Teddy Roosevelt's spot, because he helped bring boxing into the international light again, just as the Panama Canal helped link the East and West.

    For Heavyweight impact on society---
    Sullivan
    Dempsey
    Louis
    Ali
    For greatest ability non heavyweight---
    Fitzimmons- 165 pound freak
    Joe Gans
    Sam Langford
Benny Leonard- lightweight equal of Ray Robinson
Harry Greb- a record of fighting bigger men, second to none.
Ray Robinson--best all around fighter I saw live
    Willie Pep-the unhittabloe
Being that they are smaller, seven could find room at Mt. Rushmore...

Anyone picking all HW's should be throw off Mt Rushmore.

Surely for even the biggest HW head, the contribution made by men at lower weights should be acknowledged.

Well, thing is hws are the ones who were on top the ones recognized everywhere, the ones who caught the publics attention, the imagination of the people. Only very few fighters from the lower weights were able to do so. If you have to pick fighters for that you have to take the ones who had the biggest impact, not on boxing but the world. And those are all hws.
